Brown, meanwhile, said she had to build Elodie rather than borrow a template from another character. Their comments describe the creative logic behind the role—not private casting deliberations.
What is Damsel about?
Damsel is a 2024 Netflix fantasy film starring Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie. She agrees to marry a prince, but the marriage leads to her being sacrificed to a dragon. Left to survive with her own wits and resolve, Elodie takes the story away from the familiar pattern of a princess waiting to be rescued. Netflix’s official listing gives the film a PG-13 rating: Netflix’s Damsel listing.
Why did the director say Brown was right for the role?
Fresnadillo told Netflix Tudum that Dan Mazeau’s script appealed to him because it turned the princess-and-dragon adventure “completely upside down.” Instead of treating the premise as a conventional rescue story, the film centers on what happens when Elodie must endure danger and act for herself.
He described that change as the story’s emotional core: “At the core, this is such a beautiful story about a young woman becoming a strong, independent, and empowered adult.” That is Fresnadillo’s account of what drew him to the material and what he saw at the center of the character’s journey; it should not be read as a claim that empowerment was the production’s sole casting criterion. How did Brown approach playing Elodie?
Brown said she could not find an existing character to use as a model for Elodie. She described creating the role as a process of discovering its strengths and weaknesses and building a journey that would give viewers reason to care about Elodie and root for her.
“I couldn’t find anyone for Elodie and so I knew I was going to have to create her, find her along the way, find what her weaknesses and strengths are, and really create a life and a journey for her so that everybody would care about her, believe in her, and root for her.”

That account complements Fresnadillo’s explanation: the film’s premise gives Elodie an unusual path, while Brown’s work was to make the person taking that path feel specific and emotionally credible. It does not establish the details of private casting discussions.
How does Damsel change the fairy-tale formula?
The reversal is broader than the rescue setup. The film revisits familiar roles and complicates them: Elodie is not saved by the prince, the stepmother is not simply wicked, and the dragon’s grievance has a history. Fresnadillo has described the traditional arrangement as something the filmmakers wanted to modernize. Netflix’s ending explainer discusses those reversals in detail, including the dragon and queen; it contains major plot spoilers. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer.

What production details support the survival story?
The setting gives Elodie’s ordeal a physical environment rather than a purely abstract fairy-tale backdrop. Netflix reports that the production designed seven caverns and built most cave locations as practical sets in London warehouses. Exterior castle grounds and mountain shots were filmed in Portugal, while the digitally created castle drew on Manueline architecture. These details establish how the filmmakers built the world; they do not identify which stunts Brown performed. Netflix Tudum’s production and locations feature.
