It follows Maya after Hawkeye, bringing her back to her family and community. Disney’s production materials describe Choctaw Nation engagement and ASL-informed work on set—specific practices that give a clearer account of the series’ representation than a broad claim that diversity is simply “at the forefront.”
What is Marvel’s Echo about?
The series follows Maya Lopez after the events of Hawkeye. She returns home and faces her family, her roots, and the legacy of her past, while Wilson Fisk’s criminal enterprise remains a threat. Disney announced Echo as a five-episode series. Its official cast announcement identifies Alaqua Cox as the lead; it does not identify Jeremy Renner as a star of the series. Renner’s Clint Barton, also known as Ronin, is part of Maya’s earlier story in Hawkeye.
Disney+ Press’s series announcement and its earlier production announcement establish the show’s cast and connection to Maya’s introduction in Hawkeye.
Who is represented in the story and production?
Maya is a Native American character with roots in the Choctaw community. Cox, who portrays her, is Menominee, deaf, and an amputee, according to Disney and D23 materials. These are distinct identities and experiences; Cox’s background should not be treated as interchangeable with Maya’s Choctaw roots or as representative of all Indigenous people.

Disney’s official materials name Indigenous performers and creative contributors including director and executive producer Sydney Freeland (Navajo), Catriona McKenzie (Gunaikurnai), Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, Cody Lightning, and Graham Greene. The ensemble brings multiple people and backgrounds to the production, not a single voice standing in for Indigenous communities.
In a Disney production feature, Freeland said, “Authenticity and representation are extremely important.” The value of that statement is clearest when paired with the concrete practices and creative roles the production described.

How did the production engage with the Choctaw Nation?
Disney reports that Freeland wanted the production to engage with the Choctaw Nation. She said the team traveled to Oklahoma to present the project and ask for permission and dialogue, describing the Nation as a collaborator. The production also invited crew members to a Choctaw Nation powwow during preproduction.
“When we traveled to Oklahoma to present the project to them, we basically asked them two things: one, for permission, and two, for a dialogue. And they were great collaborators, even now.”

How did ASL shape the series?
Disney reports that cast and crew took American Sign Language (ASL) classes and that ASL master and consulting producer Doug Ridloff worked with the production. Freeland said that signing and facial expression influenced the show’s visual approach:

Cox has spoken personally about what the role could mean for Indigenous viewers. In a D23 interview, she said Maya could offer Indigenous people a leading character and representation “in an authentic way.” That is Cox’s perspective on the role, not a claim that one series can encompass every Indigenous experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Echo connected to Hawkeye?
Yes. Maya was introduced in Hawkeye, and Echo continues her story afterward. Marvel described the new series as a character-focused continuation centered on her return home. Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum said the Marvel Spotlight banner was intended to signal self-contained, character-driven stories that do not require viewers to complete other Marvel installments first. That is the studio’s stated positioning, rather than a guarantee that every viewer will have the same experience without prior context. His remarks appear in The Walt Disney Company’s interview.
When did it launch, and where can viewers watch?
Echo launched in the United States on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2024, with all five episodes released at once. Winderbaum described the premiere time as January 9 at 6 p.m. PT; that is the same launch moment expressed in a US time zone that was still on January 9. These are historical launch details, not confirmation of current availability. Catalogs can vary by country and change over time, so check the relevant streaming service in your territory for present-day access.
