In Hatsune Miku culture, 39 is wordplay associated with “Miku” and a way to say “thank you.” It appears in the official title of a Miku Day event held on March 9, 2010, and Crypton Future Media later used “thank you (39)” to express gratitude to Miku’s creators and fans worldwide.
Why is 39 associated with Hatsune Miku?
The number works as a compact Miku-related wordplay and as a thank-you sentiment. Crypton Future Media made the second meaning explicit in a December 2023 statement: its representative director, Hiroyuki Itoh, said the company wanted to convey “サンキュー（39）” to Hatsune Miku’s creators and fans around the world. The Japanese phrase means “thank you (39).” Crypton’s announcement presents 39 as appreciation, not merely a reference to the character’s name.
That distinction matters: the number can evoke Miku while also communicating gratitude to the people who make and enjoy work connected with her. The sources document these uses, but do not identify who first made the association or when fans began using it.
What does March 9 have to do with Miku Day?
March 9 is associated with Miku Day through the number 39. SEGA’s official Hatsune Miku -Project DIVA- archive records an event held on March 9, 2010, under the title “ミクの日感謝祭 39’s Giving Day.” The title itself connects Miku Day with giving thanks. SEGA’s event archive is evidence of a documented celebration on that date; it does not establish the first occasion on which people linked March 9 and Miku.

Why does the thank-you meaning fit Miku’s culture?
Hatsune Miku is both singing-synthesis software and a character. Crypton says Miku was released on August 31, 2007, and describes independent creators making music, illustrations, and videos that spread online. Its English-language official profile likewise describes Miku as a collaboratively constructed cyber celebrity whose worldwide community creates and shares related work.
In that context, thanking creators and fans recognizes a culture built through participation as well as a software product and character. Crypton’s 2023 statement directly supports that reading: it addresses the creative community, not only Miku as an individual character. This community context helps explain the resonance of 39 as appreciation, without making it a formal or exclusive definition of the number.

Is there a confirmed origin for 39 as Miku wordplay?
The official sources establish examples of the association, not a definitive origin story. Crypton’s 2023 use of “thank you (39)” and SEGA’s 2010 “39’s Giving Day” event title show that both meanings are in documented use. They do not name the first person to connect 39 with Miku, give the exact date fans adopted the wordplay, or quantify how many people celebrate March 9.
