Netflix says Jackson had no creative control. The series includes footage from the days before Combs’ September 2024 arrest, but how that material was released is disputed: the director and Netflix say it was legally obtained, while Combs’ representative says it was not authorized. A later account from videographer Michael Oberlies adds another explanation, but does not settle the rights question.
What is the Netflix documentary, and what does it cover?
Sean Combs: The Reckoning is a four-part documentary directed by Alexandria Stapleton and executive produced by Jackson, known as 50 Cent. Netflix’s series guide says it follows Combs’ rise, the Bad Boy Records empire, allegations against him and the criminal case. It also describes the historical rivalry between Bad Boy and Death Row Records.
That last rivalry is not the same thing as a claimed 20-year personal feud between Combs and Jackson. The official episode guide establishes that the Bad Boy–Death Row competition is part of the documentary’s subject matter; it does not establish a continuous, dated 20-year Combs–Jackson rivalry or show that such a rivalry caused Netflix to make the series. The “20-year” framing should therefore be treated as a headline claim, not a verified chronology.
Netflix says Jackson was an executive producer, not the person with creative control, and that no participant was paid. His involvement still gives viewers a reason to consider the project’s perspective: an executive producer who has publicly criticized its subject is not a neutral outsider, even if he did not control the finished series.

How did the documentary get the footage of Combs?
The disputed material includes scenes filmed with Combs’ knowledge in the six days before his September 2024 arrest and indictment, according to Netflix’s documentary guide. Knowledge that a camera is present, however, is not the same as agreement to release the footage in a documentary. The parties have given different accounts of how the material reached the production and whether its use was authorized.
| Account | What the source says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Director Alexandria Stapleton, quoted by Netflix Tudum | Stapleton said the footage “came to us,” was legally obtained and that the team had the necessary rights. | Her statement is the director’s account; it is not a court ruling on ownership or authorization. |
| Combs’ representative | The representative called the series a “shameful hit piece” and alleged the footage was “never authorized for release.” | The allegation does not by itself establish that the footage was stolen or unlawfully used. |
| Netflix spokesperson, quoted by Variety | Netflix said the footage of Combs leading up to his indictment and arrest was legally obtained. It also said Jackson was an executive producer without creative control. | Netflix’s denial is not an independent finding about the footage’s chain of custody or legal rights. |
| Videographer Michael Oberlies, as reported by Rolling Stone | Oberlies said a freelancer covered for him for three days while he was out of state and released the material. He said the incident was not about a fee or contract dispute. | This is Oberlies’s reported account, not an independently verified ruling or proof that the release was authorized. |
These accounts are not interchangeable: Netflix and Stapleton describe the production’s rights position, Combs’ representative disputes authorization, and Oberlies describes how he believes the material left his control. The sources cited here do not establish a final ruling resolving the footage dispute. Calling the footage “stolen” as a settled fact—or calling its legality conclusively established—would go beyond what those statements prove.

What is established about Combs and the 50 Cent feud?
The documentary’s executive-producer credit and Jackson’s public-adversary status make the feud relevant context for judging the project. But the available official description does not document a continuous 20-year feud with dates, episodes or a clear start point. Nor does the fact that the documentary covers Bad Boy and Death Row establish that Combs and Jackson personally sustained a two-decade rivalry.
It is useful to keep three subjects separate:
- The documentary’s focus: Combs, Bad Boy, allegations against him and the criminal case.
- The historical music-industry rivalry: Bad Boy and Death Row, which Netflix’s guide says the series discusses.
- The producer-subject tension: Jackson’s role as executive producer while being publicly at odds with Combs. Netflix says he lacked creative control; that does not erase the conflict viewers may reasonably weigh.
On the evidence available, “a documentary produced by a public adversary” is supportable. “A 20-year feud that fueled the documentary” combines an unsubstantiated duration with an unproven motive.

What does the documentary’s criminal-case context establish?
Netflix’s December 2025 guide reported that Combs was acquitted of racketeering and sex-trafficking charges and convicted on two counts of transportation for purposes of prostitution. Those reported trial outcomes are distinct from the broader allegations the documentary covers; the series’ presentation of allegations should not be mistaken for a verdict on each one.
The same guide said Combs was appealing at the time it was published. That is a dated account, not confirmation of the appeal’s status on October 8, 2026. No present-tense claim about the appeal’s status is warranted here.
