No sustained feud between Jon Cryer and Molly Ringwald is established by their public accounts. Ringwald said she “never had any problems with Jon,” while recalling one scene in which she and Andrew McCarthy deliberately provoked Cryer into a genuine angry reaction. The more clearly documented conflict was between Cryer and McCarthy, who later reconciled.
What Molly Ringwald said about Jon Cryer
In a 2021 Vogue interview marking the film’s 35th anniversary, Ringwald responded to Cryer’s earlier recollection that some cast members seemed irritated with him. She said she felt bad he had experienced it that way, but stated, “I never had any problems with Jon.”

Ringwald did remember one occasion when the two seemed to butt heads. She thought Cryer might have been referring to the club scene where Duckie is supposed to be angry at Andie for arriving with Blane. From off camera, Ringwald and McCarthy egged Cryer on to draw out the reaction. Cryer became genuinely furious, she recalled, and she later understood that the anger was real. Ringwald described it as the only time she could recall the three of them butting heads.
Why the set incident is not evidence of a feud
The incident Ringwald described was a specific attempt to intensify a performance during a scene, not proof of ongoing hostility between her and Cryer. A 2026 Parade report recounts Cryer’s version: he became angry when Ringwald and McCarthy joked around during his close-up, and later learned the director had asked them to provoke him. The accounts differ in their framing, but both describe a deliberate provocation connected to the scene.

The better-documented conflict was Cryer and Andrew McCarthy
At a 2024 screening of Brats, Cryer said he and McCarthy did not get along while making Pretty in Pink; McCarthy agreed. The Los Angeles Times reported that McCarthy had apologized years earlier and that the two had made amends. This is the conflict Cryer has publicly described as serious—not a sustained feud with Ringwald.
Keep the Ringwald–McCarthy accounts separate
Director Howard Deutch gave a separate account of tension between Ringwald and McCarthy, telling Den of Geek, “They hated each other.” Deutch attributed it to Ringwald having a crush on McCarthy that was not returned. Ringwald disputed that version in the Vogue interview: she said McCarthy had a crush on her, and that they got along, though they were neither a couple nor close friends. These are conflicting retrospective accounts about Ringwald and McCarthy, and they do not establish a Cryer–Ringwald feud.
