There is no confirmed evidence that Meghan Markle’s center diamond got bigger. The documented change is a 2019 redesign: the ring’s plain yellow-gold band was replaced with a slimmer diamond pavé band, and the original stones were reset in a new setting, according to a jeweler quoted by British Vogue.
What changed about the ring?
In June 2019, British Vogue compared the ring’s appearance with earlier photographs and reported that its band looked slimmer and featured diamond pavé, rather than the original plain yellow gold. Jeweler Laura Lambert of Fenton & Co told the magazine that the center and accent stones had been removed from the original setting and placed in a bespoke new one. British Vogue’s 2019 report therefore supports describing the ring as redesigned or reset—not as having a larger center diamond.
Lambert also suggested that resizing during pregnancy could have provided an occasion for a stylistic change. That was her possible explanation, not a confirmed account of Meghan’s motive.
What was the original design?
In the couple’s engagement interview, published in an ABC News transcript on November 27, 2017, Prince Harry said the ring was yellow gold, that he sourced its main stone from Botswana, and that the smaller diamonds on either side came from his mother’s jewelry collection. Vogue’s contemporaneous account described the ring as a three-stone design: a larger center diamond flanked by two smaller stones. Vogue’s original-ring coverage described the side stones as coming from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection.

Later coverage discussed speculation that the ring’s setting may have changed again, based on photographs from public appearances and promotional material. Those reports did not establish that the center stone itself was replaced or enlarged. The later report describes the claims as speculation and says the exact changes are unclear.

Photographs can make a ring look different because of its setting, angle, lighting, or image scale. In this case, the available reporting supports a band and setting redesign in 2019, while no reliable before-and-after measurements or direct confirmation establish a larger center diamond.
