That goal connects his Mugen Train fight with Kyojuro Rengoku to his later battle against Tanjiro and Giyu. Manga spoilers ahead—the final section discusses Akaza’s human identity and relationships.
Akaza’s rank and ambition
1. Upper Three is his stated rank
The official Infinity Castle character profile identifies Akaza as Upper Three. That is the specific rank the profile establishes; it is not a complete ranking of every fighter or a numerical measure of how he compares with each character.

2. He is explicitly driven by martial mastery
The same profile says, “Upper Three. He is aiming for the highest level of martial arts.” That concise description makes his pursuit of combat skill central to how the official character page presents him. It also offers a useful lens for reading his battles: they are not merely obstacles in the plot, but encounters shaped by his stated ambition.
What the official summaries say about his fights
3. Rengoku is a defining opponent
The official character profile singles out Akaza’s deadly fight with Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku. For anime-first viewers, that anchors Akaza’s story to the Mugen Train events and makes the encounter a defining part of his on-screen history.

4. Muzan’s blood links him to the Mugen Train attack
SEGA’s official game character entry says Akaza received blood from Kibutsuji and attacked Tanjiro and the other Demon Slayers aboard the Mugen Train. This summary supplies a detail the film character page does not foreground: Akaza’s connection to Muzan in the lead-up to the attack.
5. Different official bios emphasize different details
The Aniplex film profile focuses on Akaza’s rank, martial ambition, and Rengoku fight. SEGA’s game entry instead gives the Mugen Train context, including the blood he received from Kibutsuji and his attack on the Demon Slayers. These are different snapshots, not exhaustive biographies, so neither summary should be treated as a complete account of his character.

His later battle with Tanjiro and Giyu
6. The Infinity Castle fight continues an earlier story
Akaza’s clash with Tanjiro is not an isolated matchup. VIZ’s synopsis for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 18 says the battle between Tanjiro, Giyu, and Akaza continues. The change in opponents and setting puts this fight in conversation with the Mugen Train confrontation, without making the two encounters interchangeable.
7. The volume synopsis connects the battle to the Transparent World
VIZ’s description says Tanjiro must use the Transparent World technique his father taught him to push past his limits. The synopsis therefore frames the encounter not only as a fight against Akaza, but also as a test of Tanjiro’s ability to use what he has learned.

8. Vol. 18 is a direct way to locate the manga material
The English paperback listing on VIZ identifies the volume as ISBN 978-1-9747-1760-6, 192 pages, released November 3, 2020, with a Teen rating. Those are details for that specific VIZ listing and edition; check the linked page for current retailer and regional availability.

9. His human identity is Hakuji
Spoilers for Akaza’s backstory: a GamesRadar+ explainer published September 16, 2025 identifies Akaza’s former human name as Hakuji. The manga is the primary source for this reveal; the recap is useful as a signpost, not a substitute for the story itself.
Rank #4
10. His past includes Keizo and Koyuki
The same explainer connects Hakuji’s past to martial artist Keizo and Keizo’s daughter, Koyuki. Knowing those relationships gives readers a reason to revisit Akaza’s conduct and priorities with his human history in mind. That is an interpretive invitation, not proof of a single intended reading of the character.
