Denzel Washington was baptized and received a minister’s training license at a ceremony at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem on December 21, 2024. The license marked the start of a training path—not completed ordination. ABC News and The Guardian reported on the ceremony.
What happened at the ceremony?
Washington was immersed in baptism and presented with a baptism certificate during the Harlem service, which The Guardian reported was livestreamed. ABC News identified the church as The First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York; The Guardian named the venue as Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ and described it as affiliated with the Church of God in Christ denomination.

At the same ceremony, Washington received a minister’s training license. That distinction matters: the reports described training toward possible future ordination, not an announcement that he had already been ordained.
Did Denzel Washington become an ordained minister?
No. Bishop James Pullings Jr. explained that the license was for training and spoke of ordination as a possible future step: “This license is for him to train. We pray that he will go forth and do what he has to do, so that one day I can ordain him, amen.” ChurchLeaders reported that Washington planned to complete classes required for ordination at Kelly Temple. ChurchLeaders’ report describes the classes and Pullings’s remarks.

What does a minister’s training license mean?
The Guardian reported that this kind of license can enable a minister to officiate at minor religious services, such as weddings, and may lead to ordination. That description should not be taken as a universal statement of legal authority: the reports do not establish what the license permits in every jurisdiction. The Guardian’s account provides the reported context.

Washington recalled meeting Ruth Green when he was 20, in his mother’s beauty parlor. As reported by ABC News, he said Green told him, “boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people.” This is Washington’s recollection of her prediction, not an independently verified statement by Green. He also said, “It took a while, but I’m here.” ABC News’ report includes those remarks.
