When was Demi Moore first nominated?
Moore’s first Golden Globe nomination was in 1991, for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Ghost. She received two further nominations in 1997 for If These Walls Could Talk: one for acting in a limited series or television movie, and another for the television film itself. Her 2025 win came 34 years after that first nomination, calculated from the official award years.
What did Moore say in her acceptance speech?
Moore described the moment as her first acting award after more than four decades in the profession. As transcribed by the Los Angeles Times, she said: “I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor, and I’m just so humbled and so grateful.” The “over 45 years” figure was Moore’s own approximate description of her career.

She also recalled that a producer had called her a “popcorn actress” about 30 years earlier. Moore did not identify the producer in the speech. Reflecting on receiving the script for The Substance after a period of self-doubt, she said, “And the universe told me that you’re not done.”

Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, the 2024 film stars Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, an actress and television fitness personality who is pushed aside for being too old. Elisabeth turns to an underground drug that creates a younger version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. The film’s story of aging and professional rejection gave particular context to Moore’s speech about being dismissed and later receiving a role that renewed her sense of possibility.
