In later reflections, Burke described a painful period that affected her relationship with the show and with acting. Her account of past crystal meth use to control her weight and a 2000 report of a type 2 diabetes diagnosis are historical disclosures, not evidence of her current health.
What happened to Delta Burke on Designing Women?
Burke became widely known for playing Suzanne Sugarbaker, a former beauty queen whose confidence and comic flair made her a distinctive character. She appeared on the series for five seasons. A 2024 Los Angeles Times report revisited Burke’s experience and summarized her account of a fraught relationship with the show and its production. Burke described the experience as “It got ugly and very sad.” That is her retrospective description, not a complete account of every person’s view of the workplace conflict.
At the time, the production also spoke publicly about weight on the show. A December 1989 Los Angeles Times article quoted executive producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason saying, “As a matter of fact, I thought the character of the former beauty queen was more interesting overweight.” That contemporaneous statement records the producer’s view; it does not establish how Burke felt supported or resolve the later disagreements she described.
How did Burke describe weight and Suzanne Sugarbaker?
In a May 1995 interview, Burke discussed both the public attention to her weight and the way she understood her character’s development. She said, “Suzanne Sugarbaker got more interesting and more complex the larger I got.” This was Burke’s interpretation of her acting and the character, not a medical observation or a claim that weight determines someone’s personality.

The same interview noted that Burke had drawn since grade school and became interested in apparel design after having difficulty finding clothes following weight gain. It offers a contemporaneous view of her creative interests alongside the pressures she faced. The 1995 Los Angeles Times interview is useful context for understanding why her account cannot be reduced to a number on a scale.
Did Delta Burke use drugs to lose weight?
In an interview published in 2024, Burke disclosed past crystal meth use in an effort to keep weight off, as summarized by the Los Angeles Times. This is a retrospective account of behavior in the past. It does not indicate current use, and crystal meth is not a safe or appropriate weight-management method.

A June 2000 Los Angeles Times profile reported that Burke had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1997 and said the condition was under control at the time of the profile. Those are dated details from that report; they do not establish her health, diabetes management, or medication status today.
