Daniel Ezra did not leave All American outright: he stopped being a series regular before season 7, but returned as a guest star and directed an episode. The show later included him as Spencer James in its series finale.
Did Daniel Ezra leave All American?
Ezra, who has played Spencer James since the series began, moved from the regular cast to guest-star status for season 7. The CW also confirmed he would direct during the season, so the change did not mean an immediate departure from the show either on screen or behind the camera. TVLine reported the network’s confirmation.

Why did Daniel Ezra leave the regular cast?
TheWrap reported on June 24, 2024, that Ezra and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll made the decision jointly before production on season 6 began. That report establishes the timing and that it was a joint decision; it does not establish a more specific personal motive, contract dispute, or conflict. Read TheWrap’s report.
How did season 7 change the original cast?
Ezra’s shift was part of a broader cast reset, rather than an isolated change. In September 2024, TVLine reported that among the original cast members it discussed, only Michael Evans Behling, Greta Onieogou, and Bre-Z had signed new series-regular deals for season 7. TVLine’s report on the season 7 cast changes provides that limited context; it does not mean those were the only regulars in the whole cast.

Did Daniel Ezra return after season 7?
Yes. The CW announced on June 2, 2025, that All American would have an eighth and final season, with 13 new episodes planned for 2026. The network’s episode listing credits Ezra as Spencer in the series finale and also lists him as the director of an episode. The CW’s season 8 announcement and its episode listing document the later status.
