Detective Sherdil is worth considering if you want a light, performance-led comedy mystery, but less so if you expect a tightly constructed whodunit. Diljit Dosanjh brings warmth and comic energy to the lead role, while reviewers have repeatedly found the murder investigation predictable and short on suspense. The film is streaming on ZEE5, subject to current availability in your region.
What is Detective Sherdil about?
Set in Budapest, this Hindi comedy mystery follows Detective Sherdil as he investigates the murder of Indian-origin telecom tycoon Pankaj Bhatti. Suspicion spreads across Bhatti’s family and associates. The official synopsis begins with what appears to be a hate crime, then introduces a confession that does not fit the details of the case.
Ravi Chhabriya directed the film, his directorial debut according to ZEE5. The listed cast includes Diljit Dosanjh, Diana Penty, Boman Irani, Chunky Panday, Banita Sandhu, Ratna Pathak Shah, Sumeet Vyas, Kashmira Irani and Arjun Tanwar. ZEE5 classifies it as a 2025 Hindi comedy and mystery, with a runtime of 1 hour 46 minutes and a U/A 13+ classification. See ZEE5’s film listing.
How good is Diljit Dosanjh in the lead?
Dosanjh is the film’s clearest draw. The reviews agree more on his appeal than on the film’s success as a mystery: he gives Sherdil an easygoing presence and a comic rhythm that helps keep the story amiable even when the investigation loses momentum.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

That charm is central to the movie’s appeal, but it is not the same as a compelling detective story. If you enjoy Dosanjh’s screen presence and are happy to watch a character-led comedy, the performance may be enough to carry the film for you. If you need the clues and deductions to do most of the work, the lead cannot fully compensate for the screenplay’s weaknesses.
Does the murder mystery work?
Not consistently, according to the three published reviews considered here. Scroll.in’s Nandini Ramnath describes the film as “thick with amiability but thin on the kind of detective work that even knowingly silly crime films need.” India Today’s Vineeta Kumar says viewers may anticipate the culprit early, while OTTplay’s Aishwarya Vasudevan also finds the case-solving obvious and the screenplay underwhelming. The key distinction is between enjoying the character and being surprised by the case. The premise offers suspects, a murder and a confession that does not line up, but the criticism suggests the film does not develop those elements into a sufficiently fair or suspenseful puzzle. This is a recurring judgment across these reviews, not proof that every viewer will find the mystery predictable.
What about the supporting cast, humor and pace?
The ensemble adds personality, with Ramnath singling out Sumeet Vyas and Ratna Pathak Shah. The cast can make individual scenes more engaging, but the reviews do not suggest that it fixes the investigation’s structural shortcomings.

The humor may also be a matter of taste. OTTplay notes that it leans on meme-style jokes; India Today criticizes the suspense and pacing. Viewers who enjoy broad, contemporary comic touches may find more to like than those looking for a steadily tightening thriller. The criticism points to uneven momentum rather than a uniformly grim or serious crime film.
Is Detective Sherdil worth watching?
Choose it for Dosanjh’s genial performance, the cast and a light comedy-mystery setup—not for a particularly intricate whodunit. The critical pattern is strongest on that trade-off: the central performance and ensemble are appealing, while the clues and suspense have drawn more reservations.
