Dark Side of the Ring presents Black Saturday—the 1984 takeover of Georgia Championship Wrestling’s WTBS slot—as a failed venture that helped provide money for the first WrestleMania. That is the episode’s account, not a financing trail independently established by the sources available here. The historical event itself is clearer: on July 14, 1984, WWF programming replaced the familiar GCW show on WTBS, provoking a strong backlash from viewers.
What was Black Saturday?
On Saturday, July 14, 1984, viewers tuning to WTBS at its customary 6:05 p.m. ET wrestling time saw Freddie Miller introduce Vince McMahon. WWF-taped matches took the place of Georgia Championship Wrestling’s World Championship Wrestling television program. WWE later described the change and the ensuing public outcry as “Black Saturday.” WWE’s 2013 retrospective with Gerald Brisco recounts the switch and the reaction.

The change mattered not only because one promotion displaced another, but because audiences had expected GCW’s established studio-wrestling presentation. Brisco, a major GCW shareholder alongside his brother Jack, said he had expected McMahon’s wrestlers to appear at live GCW events. Instead, the WTBS broadcast used taped matches. He also recalled that Ted Turner preferred studio wrestling and wanted action rather than clips. Those are Brisco’s retrospective recollections, rather than a neutral account of every participant’s motives.
How does the episode connect Black Saturday to WrestleMania?
Dark Side of the Ring season 5, episode 10, titled “Black Saturday: The Rise of Vince,” frames the failed TBS venture as a source of money McMahon used to finance the first WrestleMania. The episode is the basis for the headline’s funding claim; VICE’s official episode catalog identifies the program and its episode placement.

That should be understood as the documentary’s account, not as a verified transaction history. The sources reviewed do not establish the exact proceeds from the TBS deal, how those proceeds were later allocated, or an accounting trail showing that they paid WrestleMania’s costs. An unofficial transcript mirror can indicate what the episode says, but cannot independently confirm the financial claim. No reliable amount should be attached to the alleged funding without stronger documentation.
What did the takeover involve?
Brisco said dissatisfied GCW shareholders were part of the backdrop to the sale, despite the promotion doing good business in newer markets. He recalled that a voting proxy from Paul Jones helped the sellers cross the 50 percent threshold needed to complete the deal. These details are Brisco’s account in WWE’s 2013 retrospective; they explain how he remembered the shareholder vote, not the precise financial terms of the transaction.

Brisco summed up the event as a turning point, saying: “They call it ‘Black Saturday’ for a reason. It changed the face of professional wrestling.” That is his retrospective judgment. The immediate, concrete change was the programming on WTBS: GCW’s familiar show was replaced by WWF tapes, and viewers objected.
