Ronan directed his feature debut, and father and son co-wrote the drama. The return is established for this film; it does not confirm that Daniel Day-Lewis plans to resume acting regularly.
Why did Daniel Day-Lewis return for Anemone?
After announcing his retirement in 2017 following Phantom Thread, Day-Lewis stepped away from film acting. In an Associated Press interview, he said the thought of Ronan making films while he had left that world saddened him: “It saddened me that I had perhaps ruled myself out of that when I decided to work on something else for a while.”

The project began as a small idea between father and son and developed into a feature. Day-Lewis described that growth to the AP this way: “As we progressed through it, and it seemed less and less possible to contain it, like two fellas in a shed, it began to alarm me slightly.” The AP described Anemone as his return after an eight-year absence from film acting.
What is Anemone about?
Anemone is a drama directed by Ronan Day-Lewis in his feature directorial debut. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Ray, who lives in isolation. Sean Bean plays Ray’s brother, Jem, who visits and urges him to reconnect with his son, according to the Associated Press’s festival coverage.
