It remains entertaining, with the series’ humor and energy intact, but its turn toward Jiji’s story and Okarun’s feelings for Momo can feel more like setup than payoff.
What happens in “First Love”
Crunchyroll lists “First Love” as episode 11, released December 12, 2024. Its synopsis introduces Jiji, Momo’s childhood friend and first love, who begins living at her house after being troubled by apparitions at his new home. Okarun is unsettled by Jiji’s connection to Momo and starts distancing himself from her. Crunchyroll’s episode listing rates the episode 16+ and notes advisories for violence, suggestive dialogue, sexual violence, smoking, and suicide.
ORICON’s Japan Anime News preview, published December 10, 2024, likewise identifies Jiji (Jin Enjoji) as Momo’s childhood friend and first love and says the episode was scheduled to air in Japan on December 12 (JST). ORICON’s preview provides that Japanese broadcast context.
Why a reviewer called it a relative stumble
CBR’s Alan A. Mehanna framed the episode as “slightly misaligned,” especially in its position as the season’s penultimate installment. That is a critic’s assessment, not an objective measurement or evidence of broad audience agreement. The available excerpt also describes the episode as entertaining and praises the humor, distinctive characters, and energetic storytelling. The criticism is about how the story is arranged, not a claim that everything in the episode falls flat. CBR’s review is the source for that qualified judgment.

A shift from escalation to setup
Episode 10 had expanded the setting and delivered major developments. Episode 11 pivots to Jiji’s arrival and the complications he brings, while giving space to Okarun’s reaction to Momo’s history with him. Coming just before a finale, that new character thread and relationship tension can feel like the story is opening another door rather than bringing the season’s current momentum to a head.
Why the same choice can still work
A penultimate episode does not have to be a climax. It can introduce the people and problems that give the next chapter somewhere to go. Jiji’s arrival supplies a new supernatural thread, while Okarun’s discomfort adds tension to his relationship with Momo. Viewers who value character development and serial setup may find that shift purposeful; viewers looking for a strong payoff before the finale may experience it as a pause.

How to judge the episode for yourself
Rather than treating “failed to live up to the rest” as a settled verdict, consider what the episode is trying to do and whether that works for you:
- Pacing and placement: Does the move into Jiji’s story feel like useful breathing room or a detour before the finale?
- Character development: Does Okarun’s response deepen the relationship, and does Jiji’s entrance create interesting tension?
- Payoff: Does the episode resolve enough of its own story beats for a penultimate installment?
- Tone and execution: Do the humor and visual energy keep the episode engaging as the plot pivots?
These are viewing criteria, not scores. The available sources do not establish a numerical quality comparison between episode 11 and the other episodes.
