Dakota Johnson said the intimate scenes in Fifty Shades Freed took serious psychological preparation: she wanted to know beforehand what the scene required and how the crew planned to film it. She also said the scenes never became easy over the trilogy, even though she and co-star Jamie Dornan felt safe and protected with each other.
She prepared by understanding the scene in advance
In an interview published by Entertainment Tonight on February 6, 2018, while promoting Fifty Shades Freed, Johnson described the preparation as psychological as well as practical. She said she needed to know what they would do and how they would accomplish filming the intimate scenes before getting ready for them.
That advance understanding mattered because, in her account, repetition did not make the work routine. Johnson said the scenes “never got easier” across the three films. She described the set as scary, while also saying she and Dornan felt comfortable, safe, and protected with one another. A trusting relationship could help, but it did not erase the vulnerability or difficulty of the scenes.
Her physical preparation varied by scene
In a separate interview published by ELLE on February 5, 2018, Johnson described running and doing short, targeted exercises during lunch breaks. She also said she adjusted what she ate before nude scenes. These were personal choices she reported while discussing that production, not a prescribed routine or general advice for performers.

A restrained scene brought a physical reaction
Johnson also told ELLE that a blindfolded, restrained scene in the third film was particularly difficult. She could not see or physically protect herself, and said her body responded with a panic attack. She understood that she was protected and could work at her own pace, but that knowledge did not prevent the reaction.
The account illustrates why comfort with colleagues and safeguards on set do not necessarily make an intimate scene feel easy in the moment. Johnson’s description is specific to her experience filming that scene; it should not be treated as a universal account of how actors respond.

How the first film’s production tried to create trust
Accounts from the first Fifty Shades film describe production choices intended to give the actors time and space. In a TIME report published February 3, 2015, director Sam Taylor-Johnson said intimate scenes were scheduled later in production, after the cast and crew had more time to know one another. She called trust the most important factor.
Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey told TIME that the production used distance and, when possible, two cameras to reduce repeated takes. He also described remotely operating a camera from 20 feet away so an operator would not be close behind the actors. That measurement describes a specific setup on the first film, not a standard for every production or a detail Johnson gave about all three films.

What her accounts show—and what they do not
Johnson’s comments across interviews point to several different parts of the experience: knowing the scene and filming plan ahead of time, relying on a trusting working relationship, and making personal physical preparations for particular scenes. The production details from the first film add context about scheduling and camera placement, but they are separate from Johnson’s own preparation and should not be merged into one fixed routine for the trilogy.
In a Vogue profile published January 13, 2017, Johnson described her work with Dornan as close, honest, and trusting. She also said that repeating nude scenes did not make nudity easier. Taken together, her accounts suggest that trust and planning can shape an actor’s working conditions without guaranteeing that intimate or nude scenes will feel comfortable.
