The stunt began on Thursday, 7 August 2025, before Hawthorn played Collingwood. In a behind-the-scenes interview published on 15 August, Gorringe described the public attention, the difficulty of sleeping and the visitors who made the experience memorable.
Why Dan Gorringe spent 48 hours in a box
The glass-box stay followed a bet Gorringe lost. Positioned outside the MCG, the transparent enclosure let people watch in person, while viewers could also follow the stunt online. The timing put the stunt ahead of the Hawthorn–Collingwood match on 7 August 2025.
PerthNow’s Fraser Williams interviewed Gorringe about the stunt for a report published on 15 August 2025. The report identifies him as a former AFL player, reality TV personality and host of Dan Does Footy; it says he played most of his AFL career with Gold Coast and four games at Carlton.
What Gorringe said about the audience
Gorringe said the attention surprised him, partly because he believed the stunt was unprecedented in Australia. “I was (surprised by the viewership), only for the fact that no one has done it before in Australia,” he told PerthNow.

PerthNow described the audience as “hundreds of thousands” watching in person or via livestream. The report gave no exact count or measurement method, so that phrase is an unspecific description, not a verified audience statistic.
How much sleep did he get?
Sleeping in a public setting was difficult. Gorringe estimated that he got “6–7 hours of sleep across the 48 hours.” That is his estimate, not an independently measured total.

Who visited, and did he regret the stunt?
Gorringe said the Gold Coast playing squad visited and called the visit a highlight. PerthNow also named singer Ruel, footballers Cody Weightman and Cooper Hamilton, and “Chad from Big Brother” among the visitors.
He said he had no regrets: “Absolutely not. I loved it. I love that we pulled off something that hasn’t been done before, and I’m excited to keep pushing the boundaries.”
