Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye has the ingredients of a memorable anime event: striking animation, kinetic action and an emotionally charged story. The main reservation is the theatrical package’s episodic construction. It combines the opening of an existing story arc with the first three episodes of a new season, so it can feel more like a season preview than a film shaped as one continuous work.
What is Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye?
Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye was released as a theatrical launch event for the anime’s second season, rather than as a standalone feature. GKIDS described the package as the beginning of the Evil Eye arc from the previous season, the first three episodes of Season 2, and an exclusive interview with co-directors Fuga Yamashiro and Abel Gongora. The event therefore bridges seasons while giving audiences an early look at the new one.
The arc follows Momo and Okarun as they travel to a hot-springs town rented by Momo’s childhood friend Jiji. They are investigating a mystery involving Jiji’s family, but the town’s strange residents complicate their search, and a more ominous presence lies beneath the surface. GKIDS’s May 15, 2025 announcement identifies Science SARU as the animation studio, Yamashiro and Abel Gongora as Season 2 co-directors, and kensuke ushio as composer.
What holds the theatrical event back?
The format is the clearest weakness. Because the event joins previously serialized material with the first three episodes of a fresh season, its pacing can retain the stops, transitions and episode-to-episode rhythm of television. That is not the same as saying the episodes or the series are poorly made; it is a question of how well this particular package works as a film-length theatrical experience.

Two reviews illustrate the tradeoff without establishing a universal verdict. AIPT’s June 9, 2025 review calls the event a theatrical edition of Season 2’s initial three episodes and warns that it is not suited to viewers unfamiliar with the series. Gizmodo’s May 29, 2025 review points to pacing quirks typical of anime compilation releases, while praising the animation, high-energy action and emotionally charged storytelling. The criticism is best understood as a format limitation, not proof that Dan Da Dan lacks the creative potential to become a classic.
Is it a good starting point for new viewers?
Probably not the easiest entry point. The event assumes a viewer can follow a story already in progress, and its mix of prior-arc material and new episodes is designed to launch a season rather than introduce the characters and world from the beginning. Newcomers are better served by starting with Season 1 in its regular episodic order. Returning viewers can treat the theatrical package as a big-screen bridge into the next arc.

Should you watch it in a theater or as episodes?
The choice comes down to whether spectacle or continuity matters more to you. The theatrical presentation gives the new arc a shared, large-screen debut; watching the episodes in their regular series context preserves the natural breaks and progression of episodic storytelling.
| Viewing option | Best for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| The theatrical event | Returning fans who want the arc’s launch and new episodes on a big screen. | The combined material may feel episodic rather than like one continuous film. |
| The series in episode order | Viewers who want the story to unfold in its usual television context, especially newcomers beginning with Season 1. | It does not offer the event’s theatrical presentation. |
Where does the anime come from?
Dan Da Dan adapts Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga, serialized in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump Plus. For readers curious about the source, the manga is a natural way to explore the story beyond the anime; the theatrical package does not by itself establish a specific volume as its precise source. GKIDS reported in its 2025 announcement that the manga had surpassed 10 million in sales. That is the figure reported at that time, not a current sales total.
