Diane Martel, the music-video director whose work spanned Onyx, Mariah Carey and Miley Cyrus, died in New York on September 18, 2025, at age 63. Her family said she died at Memorial Sloan Kettering after a long battle with breast cancer, according to Pitchfork’s obituary.
How Diane Martel built a career across hip-hop and pop
Martel began directing music videos with Onyx’s “Throw Ya Gunz” in 1992. She went on to work across genres, making videos for hip-hop artists including Method Man and Gang Starr, as well as pop performers including Mariah Carey. Her credits included Carey’s “Dreamlover,” “Whenever You Call” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” according to Pitchfork.
Her collaborators also included Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, the Killers and Miley Cyrus. These examples show the range of her work, rather than an exhaustive list of her credits.
A visual approach to Mariah Carey
In its retrospective on Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” The Guardian notes that Carey co-directed the video with Martel. Its minimalist approach keeps Carey at the center of the frame, allowing the singer and performance to carry the visual.

Why “Blurred Lines” and “We Can’t Stop” drew attention
Two of Martel’s best-known projects arrived in 2013: Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop.” They put her work before a broad audience, but “Blurred Lines” also prompted criticism over its portrayal of women. Pitchfork describes the video as widely viewed as sexist and objectifying, and notes that an unrated version featured mostly nude models.
In a Grantland interview quoted by Pitchfork, Martel said she intended the women to take control of the scene: “I wanted to deal with the misogynist, funny lyrics in a way where the girls were going to overpower the men.” She also said she directed them to look into the camera because “they are in the power position.” Her stated intent and the critical response are both part of the video’s reception; one does not erase the other.
