In 2021, David Muir was reported to have taken on responsibility for ABC News special reports and special-event coverage in addition to anchoring World News Tonight. CNN Business, in a report republished by WRAL, said the change unfolded amid tension with George Stephanopoulos over ABC’s “chief anchor” title and who would lead major coverage. Those accounts of private negotiations and personal motives came from anonymous sources, not from an on-the-record confirmation by either anchor or ABC.
What changed in Muir’s role in 2021?
The March 2, 2021 CNN Business report said Muir would lead special reports and special-event coverage alongside his existing role anchoring World News Tonight. It described Stephanopoulos as likely to lead breaking-news coverage when it arose in the morning around Good Morning America. The report presented this as a division of coverage responsibilities, not a replacement of one anchor by the other.
The distinction matters: scheduled special reports and major events are not the same assignment as breaking news that interrupts a morning program. ABC’s later descriptions of those functions also distinguish them, though they do not confirm the details of the 2021 account.
What was the reported tension with George Stephanopoulos?
CNN Business said the two anchors’ responsibilities and the “chief anchor” title were sources of friction. The outlet’s account, based on more than half a dozen unnamed sources, said Stephanopoulos was giving up that title and felt misled about Muir’s influence. ABC News declined to comment, and the report included no named-person quotation confirming a dispute or either anchor’s private view.

Accounts of how Muir got the additional duties conflicted. One anonymous source said Muir pushed for them during contract negotiations because he did not want to be limited to the 6:30 p.m. broadcast. Another said ABC asked him to step up. These are competing explanations in the same report, not settled facts about Muir’s motive.
What did the report say about negotiations?
The report said Disney executive chairman Bob Iger and executive Peter Rice traveled to New York to address the matter. It also attributed to anonymous sources details about Stephanopoulos receiving a contract extension, a pay increase, a production company, and four prime-time specials a year. ABC did not confirm those reported terms, so they should be understood as claims in that account rather than verified contract details.

How do Muir’s current listed roles compare?
ABC’s biography lists Muir as anchor and managing editor of World News Tonight with David Muir and co-anchor of 20/20. It also notes his reporting and interviews. ABC says more than 70 million people watched him co-moderate the only 2024 presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris; that is career context, not evidence about the 2021 role dispute.
