David Muir’s reported absence from the World News Tonight anchor desk in late July 2026 appears to have been temporary, not a departure from ABC. Nicki Swift reported that Linsey Davis, Whit Johnson and Mary Bruce filled in; ABC’s official program page still identifies Muir as anchor and lists episodes through October 6, 2026.
Why was David Muir off air?
Nicki Swift reported on August 9, 2026, that Muir had been away from the anchor desk since late July. The outlet connected the absence with a vacation, but the sources available do not include an ABC statement confirming vacation as the official reason. It is therefore more precise to describe the trip as reported context rather than an ABC-confirmed explanation.
Who filled in for David Muir?
Nicki Swift named Linsey Davis, Whit Johnson and Mary Bruce as the anchors who took turns filling in during Muir’s absence. The report describes substitutions at the desk; it does not say that Muir permanently left the program.
Where was David Muir?
In an August 5, 2026 Instagram update, Muir shared vacation photos captioned “heart full and still smiling,” according to Nicki Swift. The report placed the trip in Italy and Spain and said his mother and sister joined him. The caption is not an explicit explanation of why he was off air.

How did fans react to the vacation photos?
Nicki Swift reported positive reactions from fans, including commenters who welcomed Muir taking time off. Those examples show that some commenters were pleased for him; they do not establish how most viewers felt or measure overall audience sentiment.
Did David Muir leave ABC?
ABC’s official World News Tonight page continues to identify Muir as the anchor and lists recent episodes through October 6, 2026. That supports the conclusion that the reported absence was temporary, not evidence of a departure from ABC.
