Spoilers for season 1, episode 3. “The Hollow of His Hand” shifts Daredevil: Born Again from its premiere’s action emphasis to Hector Ayala’s trial, giving Matt Murdock a legal victory that proves tragically fragile. The episode’s strongest idea is also its sharpest turn: acquittal can settle a case without making anyone safe.
Episode details and premise
Season 1, episode 3, “The Hollow of His Hand,” was released on March 11, 2025. In the series, Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, while Wilson Fisk is a former mob boss pursuing political power in New York, according to The Walt Disney Company. Here, Matt returns to the courtroom to defend Hector Ayala, whose case tests whether justice can be achieved through the law.

The move toward a courtroom drama gives the episode a more focused center than a conventional action-heavy hour. The case is not just a legal puzzle for Matt: it puts pressure on his belief that the justice system can deliver meaningful results, even as Fisk works to shape the public debate around vigilantes.
Does the courtroom story work?
Ayala’s trial gives Matt’s conflict a concrete form. He can argue for justice as a lawyer, but the danger and injustice around him also pull at the identity he has as Daredevil. That tension makes the case matter beyond the verdict, and gives the episode a sturdier dramatic spine than spectacle alone would provide.

The episode’s main arc reaches a clear resolution in court, while the trial opens wider questions about vigilante power and political messaging. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing includes an IndieWire B+ excerpt describing the hour as a courtroom drama that opens further storylines while wrapping its main arc; that is one critic’s assessment, rather than a measure of the episode’s objective quality.
What happens at the end?
Spoilers: Matt reveals that Ayala is the vigilante White Tiger, and the jury acquits him. The verdict briefly feels like vindication for both men. That relief collapses when Ayala puts on the White Tiger suit and is shot by an unseen figure wearing a Punisher-marked garment.
The shooter is not identified onscreen, so the episode does not establish that Frank Castle killed Ayala. The uncertainty matters: the scene works as a shock, but it also leaves the immediate question of responsibility unresolved. What is clear is the cruel gap between legal success and real protection. Ayala has won his case, but the verdict cannot keep him safe from violence outside the courtroom.

Fisk has just used the verdict publicly to argue that vigilantes are dangerous. The ending therefore gives the acquittal two meanings at once: for Matt and Ayala it is a legal win, while for Fisk it becomes material for an anti-vigilante political argument. That collision makes the final turn more pointed than a simple reversal of fortune.

The episode draws on Brian Michael Bendis’s three-issue “Trial of the Century” storyline in Daredevil (1998) #38–40, illustrated by Manuel Gutierrez. It is a riff on that White Tiger trial arc, not a direct adaptation, and it should not be confused with the 1986 Born Again storyline.
The show changes the arc’s central outcome. In the comic, Ayala is found guilty and killed after fleeing court; in the series, the jury acquits him before he is assassinated later. The comic is useful as a comparison precisely because the series changes the verdict, the circumstances of Ayala’s death, and the relationship between courtroom justice and anti-vigilante politics. Critical reception
Rotten Tomatoes listed the episode at 92% from 13 critic reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026. That Tomatometer figure can change as reviews are added or scoring data is updated, so it is best read as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent consensus. The page also includes an A.V. Club A− excerpt praising Kamar de los Reyes’s performance; this is an attributed critical view, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way.
Verdict
“The Hollow of His Hand” is most effective when it makes Matt’s legal work and his life as Daredevil pull against each other. The trial gives the hour a clear dramatic question; the acquittal seems to answer it, then the final violence exposes the limits of that answer. Its comic connection adds context without making the episode a straightforward adaptation. The ending is deliberately unresolved about the shooter’s identity, but not about the cost of leaving justice to a verdict alone.
