This review evaluates Season 1, which premiered in 2025. Season 2 is now streaming on Disney+, but it is not included in this verdict. Season 1 makes a strong case for Daredevil: Born Again as one of Marvel’s best Disney+ dramas: Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio anchor a mature crime story about justice, power and the limits of the law. It is ambitious and often compelling, though uneven pacing keeps it from being an uncontested best.
What is Daredevil: Born Again about?
Marvel Television’s series follows Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, as he tries to serve justice through his legal practice. His opponent is Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), a former mob boss pursuing political power in New York. Season 1’s first two episodes aired on March 4, 2025. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 1 guide lists Dario Scardapane, Matt Corman and Chris Ord as creators.

The premise gives the show a more interesting conflict than a simple contest between a hero and a criminal. Fisk’s political ambitions put pressure on the city’s institutions, while Matt has to decide what justice means when the law and his own capacity for violence pull in different directions.
Does the legal story make the show stand out?
Yes. The season’s strongest organizing idea is Matt’s struggle to decide whether he can do more good as a lawyer taking cases for people in need or as Daredevil using force. That tension gives his two identities a shared dramatic purpose: the courtroom and the streets are competing ways to respond to injustice, not merely separate settings.
#1 Best Overall
The series also combines smaller episodic stories with a larger serialized arc. That structure can make the season feel like a crime drama with room for individual cases as well as a continuing political conflict. It is one of the more distinctive things about the show’s approach to the superhero format, though the larger story does not always move with equal momentum. The Atlantic’s review likewise highlights the tension between Matt’s legal work and vigilantism, and the blend of episodic and serialized storytelling.
How strong are the performances and tone?
Cox and D’Onofrio give the season its central dramatic force. Their characters’ opposing ideas of power and justice make the conflict feel personal as well as political. The season’s seriousness is a clear tonal shift within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that ambition helps it feel distinct from lighter, more conventional superhero fare.

That ambition is not perfectly controlled. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 1 critic consensus calls the series “an ambitious and at times ungainly crime saga” and a “mature tonal shift” for the MCU. The qualification matters: the show’s adult crime-drama aims are a strength, but its execution can be uneven.
Is it Marvel’s best Disney+ show?
That depends on what “best” means. If the priority is a serious character-led story, strong lead performances and a superhero premise built around a genuine moral dilemma, Season 1 belongs in the conversation. Its focus on Matt’s competing routes to justice and Fisk’s political rise gives it more dramatic substance than a straightforward hero-versus-villain setup.

It is harder to call it the definitive best when pacing and uneven episodes are part of the critical response. Metacritic’s Season 1 review listing reflects divided reactions: some reviewers praise Cox and D’Onofrio and find the return satisfying, while others object to pacing, unevenness or tonal choices. There is no single critical verdict that settles a subjective ranking, and a best-of claim should not be mistaken for consensus.

Watch Season 1 if you want Marvel storytelling that takes its lead character’s legal work seriously and makes the conflict between law and vigilantism central. Go in expecting a mature crime saga with compelling ideas and performances, rather than a uniformly paced season.
For viewers deciding whether to continue, Disney+ says Season 2 premiered on March 24, 2026, has eight episodes, and follows Daredevil as Mayor Fisk seeks to hunt him and control New York. That is a separate season and a new chapter, not part of this Season 1 review. Disney+’s Season 2 guide has the current series details.
