Neither Beyoncé nor Taylor Swift performed at the final-night event in Chicago on August 22. Kamala Harris delivered her acceptance speech, a balloon drop followed, and Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” played over the loudspeakers.
What happened on the DNC’s final night?
The convention concluded on August 22, 2024, with Harris’s acceptance speech and a balloon drop. Beyoncé and Swift did not appear. TIME’s account of the evening confirms that neither singer was there: TIME’s report on the DNC speculation.
“Freedom,” the Beyoncé song Harris’s campaign had adopted as an anthem and used as a walk-out song, played over the loudspeakers after the speech. Hearing the track was not a live performance or evidence that Beyoncé was in the building. The Associated Press reported the distinction in its account of the evening: AP’s report, republished by Spectrum News NY1.
Why did people expect a surprise appearance?
Rumors circulated for days and grew louder on the convention’s last night. Social-media hints, a gap in the published program, a bee emoji, and Beyoncé’s music playing at the United Center were treated as possible clues. None confirmed that either singer planned to attend. The Washington Post’s reconstruction describes the schedule gap as likely a short break to rearrange the stage, rather than evidence of a planned performance: The Washington Post’s account of how the rumor spread.

Harris’s campaign connection to “Freedom” helps explain why Beyoncé’s name came up, but a campaign’s use of an artist’s song does not establish that the artist will appear in person. Taylor Swift was also named in speculation, but neither singer made the rumored appearance.
What was confirmed, and what was rumor?
The clearest evidence is the outcome of the event and the attributable correction issued before Harris spoke. Beyoncé’s representative told The Hollywood Reporter, as relayed by AP: “Beyoncé was never scheduled to be there. The report of a performance is untrue.” TMZ had published a report predicting a performance based on unnamed sources; AP later reported that TMZ updated its story after the speech to acknowledge, “we got this one wrong.” See AP’s retrospective account of the rumor and correction.

How the rumor took hold
The Washington Post described how speculation moved from social media into broader coverage and conversation at the convention. University at Buffalo associate professor Kenneth Joseph, who studies online behavior, told the Post: “When there’s an information void, there’s an opportunity … to provide speculation.” In this case, ambiguous clues were enough to sustain the expectation, but they did not amount to reliable confirmation.
Some attendees were disappointed, while others viewed a celebrity performance as beside the point of the gathering. TIME quoted attendee Kristin Broner: “It was about our democracy. And so her being here would have been lovely, but also we were here to do something, and that was to nominate Kamala Harris to be our Democratic nominee to be the next President of the United States of America.” That is one attendee’s perspective, not a measure of the crowd as a whole.
