Neither finding proves that Leonardo’s own DNA has been identified, and the available evidence does not substantiate claims of “dark secrets.”
What the 21-generation claim actually means
A 2021 genealogy published in Human Evolution reconstructed a father-to-son line in the Da Vinci family over 21 generations. It begins with Michele, born in 1331, places Leonardo—born in 1452—in the sixth generation, and continues to living descendants. The study reported 14 living descendants at the time of publication; that figure is a 2021 count, not a current census. Read the 2021 genealogy.
This is a historical genealogy: its 21-generation span describes the family line reconstructed from records. It does not mean researchers obtained DNA from every generation, or that they sequenced Leonardo’s genome. A release summarizing the study also describes its genealogical findings. What the DNA testing of living relatives found
In a report published May 21, 2025, Italian news agency ANSA said six possible living descendants were tested and that portions of their Y chromosomes coincided. The report said this supports genetic continuity in the paternal line at least from the 15th generation. ANSA’s report on the six men.

The Y chromosome is passed along the male line, so matching portions among sampled men can support a shared paternal-line connection. But the reported comparison is among living men; it is not a direct comparison with a verified sample from Leonardo. The result therefore supports part of the family-line reconstruction without establishing Leonardo’s personal DNA profile.
Have researchers identified Leonardo’s DNA?
The sources available here do not establish a definitive DNA profile or whole-genome sequence for Leonardo. The living-relative result supports continuity in a portion of the paternal line, but it is not equivalent to testing authenticated DNA from Leonardo himself.

A separate project reported DNA and microbial traces from cultural artifacts associated with Leonardo and other artists in a preprint posted January 6, 2026. The paper describes a Y-chromosome lineage signal among its findings, but the project characterizes the results as clues and says definitive identification remains ongoing. Because the paper is a preprint, these findings are preliminary rather than a confirmed identification of Leonardo’s DNA. Read the January 2026 preprint; see also the Leonardo DNA Project overview.

Do the findings reveal “dark secrets”?
No specific dark secret is established by the cited genealogy, living-relative DNA report, or artifact preprint. The evidence concerns a reconstructed family line, reported Y-chromosome similarities among living men, and preliminary traces from artifacts. The phrase “dark secrets” is promotional framing, not a supported conclusion of these findings.
