Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story traces Christopher Reeve from his rise as the face of Superman to the life-changing horseback-riding accident that left him paralyzed in 1995, and his later work as a disability advocate. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, it draws on interviews, archival footage, family home video and audio Reeve recorded for his memoir. The result aims for a fuller portrait than a simple story of triumph over adversity.
What is Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story about?
The documentary follows Reeve’s public career and private life, including his years playing Superman, his 1995 horseback-riding accident and paralysis, and his subsequent advocacy for people with disabilities. The documentary had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Warner Bros. Discovery later announced its HBO and Max debut for December 7, 2024; that announcement records the historical launch, not present-day availability in every country or subscription tier. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement also noted that the film received six Critics Choice Documentary Awards.
What footage and interviews does the film include?
Super/Man combines film and television material with interviews, family home videos and portions of Reeve’s own recorded memoir. The personal archive offers a counterpoint to the familiar screen image: viewers see material from his life beyond the Superman role, including rehearsal and sports footage described in coverage of the trailer. The family’s participation is central to the film’s approach. His children—Matthew, Alexandra and Will—told the Associated Press that there were no restrictions on subjects or footage. Why did Christopher Reeve become a disability advocate?
After the 1995 riding accident left him paralyzed, Reeve became a prominent advocate for people with disabilities. Does the documentary present a perfect or uncomplicated portrait?
No. Reeve’s children described their aim as an honest account, not a rose-colored tribute. Will Reeve told the Associated Press: “He wouldn’t have wanted to be viewed through rose-colored glasses. He would want art and cinema and factual, comprehensive storytelling and that’s what he got.” That intention helps explain the film’s balance: it celebrates Reeve’s work and advocacy while acknowledging the emotional complexity of his family’s story.
