The headline refers to DC’s December 2020 announcement that writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Dan Mora would take over Detective Comics beginning with issue #1034. The run started in March 2021, so this is a look back at that creative-team change—not a new 2026 announcement. The headline’s description of the series as “DC’s biggest Batman comic” was not supported by a sales or readership ranking in the cited coverage.

Who joined Detective Comics, and when?

DC announced Tamaki and Mora as the incoming team on December 7, 2020, after its CCXP Worlds presentation. The change began with Detective Comics #1034. DC’s issue page lists Tuesday, March 23, 2021 as the comic’s on-sale date; the announcement recap had given March 24, a one-day discrepancy between the two publisher sources. DC’s announcement recap and the issue listing document the change and dates.

The announcement presented Tamaki and Mora as the new team, but they were not the only credited creators on #1034. DC’s listing also names Joshua Williamson as a writer and Gleb Melnikov as an artist. The issue was listed as a 40-page, Teen-rated comic with a U.S. price of $4.99 and a trim size of 6 5/8 × 10 3/16 inches; those are historical publisher specifications, not current pricing.

Why the appointment drew attention

In its December 2020 coverage, James Whitbrook’s Gizmodo article described Tamaki’s appointment as the first time a woman would lead the writing of Detective Comics. It also said she would be only the second woman to lead one of DC’s core Batman series since Devin Grayson wrote Gotham Knights in 2000. Those are claims made in that 2020 article and should be understood in that time frame. The “biggest” in its headline is not a verified ranking of sales, circulation, or readership.

What happens in the opening issue?

DC’s synopsis sets the story in a Gotham transformed by Bruce Wayne’s loss of his fortune and manor, Mayor Nakano’s election, and rising opposition to vigilantes. A devastating crime wave gives way to a murder mystery close to home. The issue also concludes the second chapter of “Demon or Detective,” which follows Damian Wayne as he encounters a faction called the League of Lazarus.

The larger mystery centers on Bruce’s neighbor Sarah Worth. In the publisher’s description of the collection, Bruce becomes the prime suspect in her murder, while her father, Roland “Mr. Worth,” seeks revenge. The political shift in Gotham and Bruce’s reduced resources are part of the story’s setup, rather than incidental background.

Should you start with the single issue or the collection?

Both formats provide an entry point, but they cover different amounts of the story. The single issue is the opening installment; the collected volume brings together the first six issues.

Format What it includes Publisher-listed details
Detective Comics #1034 The first issue of Tamaki and Mora’s announced run; also includes the specified credits and the “Demon or Detective” chapter noted above. 40 pages; Teen rating; listed U.S. price $4.99; on sale March 23, 2021, on DC’s issue page.
Detective Comics Vol. 1: The Neighborhood Issues #1034–1039, collected together. 208-page graphic novel; original on-sale date February 8, 2022. DC’s October 2022 collected-editions catalog lists the paperback at $29.99 in the U.S. and gives ISBN 978-1-77951-986-3; that is a catalog price, not a current marketplace quote.

What Tamaki said about writing the series

In a DC interview published May 28, 2021, Tamaki described the ongoing format as a challenge: “It’s a huge challenge. It’s not necessarily the character that’s challenging—the format is really challenging, to write an arc that spans eight to twelve issues that’s divided up into sufficiently cliffhanger-y twenty-page segments.” She also said, “Working with Dan Mora has been such a thrill.” Read the DC interview with Tamaki.
