2025’s memorable memes ranged from recycled TV dialogue and ironic ad audio to absurdist short-form jokes, regional trends and AI-generated image remixes. There was no single, definitive global ranking: the year-end lists available reflect reader votes, editorial selections or a particular platform and region.
How to read the year’s meme lists
“Memorable” is a matter of selection, not a measurable worldwide title. Know Your Meme’s annual Top 20 is reader-voted; Boston University’s recap presents its own choices; and Meta’s Instagram year-in-review focuses on India. These sources offer useful snapshots, but their different methods and audiences do not add up to a comparable global ranking. Know Your Meme’s 2025 roundup, Boston University’s December 16, 2025 recap and Meta’s India-specific Instagram recap document distinct perspectives.
That distinction matters when interpreting popularity. Vote shares in Know Your Meme’s list describe votes within that list, not the share of internet users who encountered or enjoyed a meme. The cited retrospectives do not establish a broad, comparable reach statistic for the year.
What kinds of memes stood out?
The examples show that 2025 meme culture was not one format. Jokes could depend on a familiar line, a sound reused against unexpected footage, intentionally strange short-form content, participation in a simple online game, or a newly generated image. The format often mattered as much as the reference.
#1 Best Overall
| Example | Source material and format | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| “I’m Your GRANDMOTHER!” | A quoted pop-culture moment | Boston University included it among its selected memes of the year; this is an editorial choice, not a universal winner. Boston University |
| Squid Game meme | Television-related meme | Also included in Boston University’s year-end selection, rather than established as a global ranking. Boston University |
| “Jet2 Holiday” | Advertisement narration reused as audio over fails and chaotic footage | The joke comes from the contrast between cheerful travel copy and mishaps. Know Your Meme |
| “Horse Race Tests” | A virtual racing simulator with crude, colorful horses | A participatory novelty that invited viewers to pick favorites, make fan art and play along. Know Your Meme |
| “Totr” | Absurdist, “brainrot”-style short-form content | Know Your Meme connects its appeal to SpongeBob; it is one entry in a reader vote, not a platform-wide popularity measure. Know Your Meme |
| Studio Ghibli-style images | AI-assisted image transformations of photos and familiar memes | Associated with debate about creative labor, branding and copyright; criticism should not be mistaken for a legal ruling. Associated Press |
Why did “Jet2 Holiday” work as a meme?
The trend repurposed the bright, reassuring narration from a Jet2 advertisement as an audio track for footage of mishaps and disorder. The same words take on a different comic effect when paired with a clip that looks nothing like a relaxing holiday. Know Your Meme documents the format, but the available material does not establish a definitive first creator or first post. Know Your Meme’s entry explains the audio-and-video pairing.
What were “Horse Race Tests”?
“Horse Race Tests” were simple virtual races featuring crude, colorful horses bouncing around a track. Their appeal was interactive: viewers could choose a favorite, follow the outcome and extend the joke with fan art or playful competition. It was a novelty format rather than just a line or image to repost. The documented description does not establish a single origin post. Know Your Meme’s entry describes the simulator and its participatory appeal.

What did “6-7” mean?
Its notable feature was that its meaning remained elusive. The Associated Press reported that Dictionary.com named “6-7” its 2025 word of the year and quoted the publisher: “We’re all still trying to figure out exactly what it means.” The line captures why an intentionally ambiguous expression can become a shared joke without settling into a clear definition. The Associated Press report attributes the selection and comment to Dictionary.com.
Which trends were specific to India?
Meta’s Instagram year-in-review highlighted the “Vishal Mega Mart” meme and interest in Labubu in its India-focused roundup. Those mentions belong in the context of Indian cultural and platform trends; they should not be presented as a worldwide ranking. Meta’s headline asked, “What kept India scrolling in 2025?”—a clear statement of the recap’s geographic scope. Meta’s recap identifies the trends as part of its India-specific Instagram review.
Labubu also shows how an online fascination can involve a physical collectible, not only a repostable joke. ABC News included Labubu dolls among its viral moments of 2025, while Meta highlighted the fascination in India. These sources establish cultural visibility, not the availability, authenticity or current price of any particular product. ABC News’ viral-moments recap and Meta’s India recap provide those distinct contexts.
Why did AI-generated Ghibli-style images prompt criticism?
In March 2025, the Associated Press reported that users were turning photos and familiar meme images into Ghibli-like images. Artist Karla Ortiz objected to the use of the studio’s identity and creative reputation to promote OpenAI products, telling AP: “That’s using Ghibli’s branding, their name, their work, their reputation, to promote (OpenAI) products,” and, “It’s an insult. It’s exploitation.” Those are Ortiz’s stated views, not a court finding or settled legal conclusion. The debate brought questions about artists’ work, branding and copyright into the meme conversation without resolving them. AP’s March 2025 report covers the image trend and the criticism.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can these examples tell us about 2025?
Taken together, the examples point to a year of format-switching: familiar dialogue could be recirculated, an advertisement could become a soundtrack for chaos, an online simulator could turn viewers into participants, and image tools could make remixing a source of public debate. Regional recaps also show why a trend’s prominence depends on where and how it is being observed.
The retrospectives are year-end snapshots, not proof that each meme was equally visible everywhere or remains active now. Their strongest use is to show different ways people made and shared jokes—and to keep the scope of each claim attached to the source that supports it.
