Voice actor David Wald alleged in October 2024 that fan mail sent to him through Funimation and Crunchyroll over roughly five years was opened, discarded, or had included items distributed to staff. Crunchyroll said it was investigating and that it does not intentionally open mail not meant for the company. The available reporting does not establish whether the allegation was substantiated or what the investigation concluded.
What did David Wald allege?
In a post dated October 26, 2024, Wald said that people who had sent him items care of Funimation or Crunchyroll during the previous five years should know he had not received them. He alleged that Crunchyroll opened his private mail, discarded letters, and passed included items to staff. The post’s wording is reported by CBR; the original post was not available for direct verification in the contemporaneous coverage reviewed here, so its language should be treated as reported wording rather than independently confirmed text.

These are Wald’s allegations, not established findings. The reporting does not independently confirm what happened to the mail or its contents.
How did Crunchyroll respond?
Crunchyroll told Anime News Network, in a statement reproduced by Animehunch, that it was investigating the allegation. The company said it respects voice actors’ privacy and does not intentionally open mail or packages not intended for Crunchyroll. It also advised fans to send mail directly to talent and their management.

“We are currently investigating the matter regarding the allegation of undelivered fan mail to a voice actor. We respect the privacy of all of our voice actors and do not intentionally open mail or packages not intended for Crunchyroll. Any fan mail should be sent directly to talent and their management.”
This is the company’s stated position; it is not an independent determination about the handling of Wald’s mail.

What is known about the outcome?
The contemporaneous reports available from October 27–28, 2024 do not establish whether Crunchyroll completed its investigation, whether any mail or items were recovered or returned, or whether the company later issued findings. They also do not establish a legal finding, lawsuit, or law-enforcement investigation. Accordingly, descriptions such as “illegal mail theft” in a headline should not be read as a legal conclusion.
