Crunchyroll said it was investigating voice actor David Wald’s allegation that fan mail sent to him through Funimation or Crunchyroll was opened, discarded, or distributed to staff. Wald’s account has not been independently established in the contemporaneous reporting, and those reports do not give a final investigation result.

What David Wald alleged

In an October 25, 2024 social-media post, Wald said that fan mail routed through Funimation or Crunchyroll over roughly five years had not reached him. Gizmodo reproduced his statement: “I learned yesterday that Crunchyroll opened my private mail, threw away your letters, and passed out any included items to their staff.” This is Wald’s allegation, not an independently verified account of what happened to each letter or package. Gizmodo reported the allegation on October 28, 2024.

Gizmodo also reported Wald’s claim that he found some items on a company giveaway table and that they were returned to him. The available reporting does not independently verify the handling of those individual items.

What Crunchyroll said

Crunchyroll provided a statement to Anime News Network, reproduced in contemporaneous coverage: “We are currently investigating the matter regarding the allegation of undelivered fan mail to a voice actor. We respect the privacy of all of our voice actors and do not intentionally open mail or packages not intended for Crunchyroll. Any fan mail should be sent directly to talent and their management.”

ComicBook.com reported on October 29, 2024 that Crunchyroll said it was taking steps to get to the bottom of the matter. That supports the fact that the company announced an investigation, not what the investigation ultimately found.

What the reporting establishes—and what it does not

  • Wald alleged that mail sent to him through Funimation or Crunchyroll did not reach him and that letters and included items were mishandled.
  • Crunchyroll said it was investigating and stated that it does not intentionally open mail or packages not meant for the company.
  • The reports do not establish a final investigation finding, a definitive account of what happened to each item, or a legal finding.

Accordingly, “theft” and “mail tampering” describe the accusation, not a proven crime. The available coverage does not establish that Crunchyroll’s investigation confirmed or disproved Wald’s claims.

Where fans were advised to send mail

In its statement, Crunchyroll advised fans to send fan mail directly to the intended talent and their management. Its statement does not provide a specific address or a process for contacting Wald, so fans should seek current instructions from the talent or their representative rather than assume that a company office will forward mail.
