Cruz Martínez said in 2007 that he had received the Kumbia Kings name rights in the United States. A later U.S. trademark record supports a narrower, specific point: a federal registration for KUMBA KINGS was ordered rectified to list Martínez as its sole and correct owner in two classes. Neither the old headline nor that registration establishes who controls every Kumbia Kings-related right worldwide today.
What did Cruz Martínez say about the Kumbia Kings name?
On August 14, 2007, People en Español reported that Martínez said he had received the Kumbia Kings name rights in the United States about two months earlier. The headline presented the development as a rights victory, but the article attributed the statement to Martínez, citing remarks he gave the Mexican newspaper Reforma. It was a report of his claim, not an adjudication by People en Español.

As quoted in the article, Martínez said: “The brand is mine, at last. It was handed to me two months ago in the US with the seal of the government. I don’t say much, I let the legal documents speak for me.” The quote should be understood in that context: it is Martínez’s description of the outcome, published in 2007.
How did the dispute begin?
People en Español’s 2007 account says A.B. Quintanilla left the Kumbia Kings in early 2006 and formed Kumbia All Starz. Martínez continued using the Kumbia Kings name until Quintanilla sued over it. That timeline describes the dispute as reported at the time; it does not, by itself, explain every claim or legal proceeding that followed.

What does the U.S. trademark record establish?
A later filing by the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) recounts an order to rectify U.S. Registration No. 2859703 to identify Cruz Martinez as the sole and correct owner of the KUMBA KINGS registration. The record specifies International Classes 9 and 41. This is evidence about a particular U.S. federal trademark registration and its listed classes—not a blanket ruling on every use of the name, music-related rights, contractual obligations, or rights in other countries. See the TTAB filing.
The distinction matters because “the rights to the name” can mean more than one thing. A trademark registration is not the same as ownership of sound recordings or compositions, nor does it automatically resolve every agreement or territory associated with a band’s name.

What happened after the 2007 report?
Martínez’s 2022 statement
On May 17, 2022, Telemundo reported that Martínez again said he had legally won the fight over the name and had rights over the band. That report documents his renewed public assertion; it should not be read as a fresh ruling or as proof of the full scope of all rights. Telemundo’s report frames the statement as Martínez’s.
Later TTAB docket activity
TTAB docket listings show later proceedings involving applications that reference KUMBIA KINGS, with matters terminating in 2025 and January 2026. Those entries establish that the proceedings occurred and were terminated; they do not, by themselves, provide a comprehensive opinion on current ownership or the full reach of the name’s rights. The TTABVUE docket listings are the place to distinguish those later proceedings from the earlier registration rectification.

What is the most accurate answer to “Who owns the Kumbia Kings name?”
The strongest precise answer supported by these records is that a TTAB filing recounts an order identifying Cruz Martinez as sole and correct owner of U.S. Registration No. 2859703 for KUMBA KINGS in International Classes 9 and 41. Martínez publicly described the outcome as receiving the name rights in the United States in 2007, and repeated a broader victory claim in 2022. The available record does not establish a definitive, current account of every territorial right or permitted use, so it would be too broad to say simply that he owns every Kumbia Kings-related right everywhere.

Martínez was promoting Los Súper Reyes and the album El Regreso de los Reyes when the 2007 report appeared. People en Español said the album had presold more than 50,000 units in Mexico before its August 14 release, attributing the presales to the fan club El Corazón de Súper Reyes. It is a historical figure reported in 2007, not a current sales figure or an independently verified total.
