Spotify still documents sharing a song’s Canvas to Instagram Stories, but a failed share can happen at several points: Canvas may be missing in Spotify, Instagram may not open correctly, or the visual may disappear in the Story composer. Start by checking whether the problem affects one song or every song; that usually points you toward the right fix.
What should happen when you share a Spotify Canvas?
In Spotify’s mobile app, open a song, tap its three-dot menu, choose Share, then Instagram Stories. Spotify says the resulting Story can include the Canvas loop, track information and a link back to Spotify. The feature is documented by Spotify for Artists; it is not a desktop or web-player sharing workflow. Spotify also says Canvas plays in its mobile app. See Spotify’s Canvas troubleshooting guidance.
Canvas is the visual, not the same thing as Instagram audio. Spotify describes Canvas as a 3–8-second vertical loop that replaces album artwork in Spotify’s mobile Now Playing view (Spotify Support). Spotify announced on August 21, 2025 that Spotify-to-Instagram Story sharing would add audio previews, with a global rollout for Spotify and Instagram users on Android and iOS (Spotify Newsroom). Audio preview availability can still differ by account, region, licensing, app state and sharing path.
Try these checks first
- Use Spotify’s mobile app. Open the song in Spotify on your iPhone or Android phone, rather than using the desktop app or web player.
- Confirm the song has a Canvas. Play it in Spotify and check whether a moving visual appears on the Now Playing screen. Test a different song with a visible Canvas if you are unsure.
- Turn off Data Saver and turn on Canvas. In Spotify, tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, turn off Data Saver under Data-saving and offline, then turn on Canvas under Content and display. These are Spotify’s documented checks when Canvas is not showing. They can establish whether Canvas is enabled in Spotify, but do not guarantee that Instagram will render it.
- Update both apps. Install available Spotify and Instagram updates from your device’s app store. Spotify recommends keeping the app updated for its Instagram integration; it does not identify a specific version that fixes every sharing problem.
- Restart the handoff. Fully close Spotify and Instagram, reopen Spotify, and try the song’s three-dot menu → Share → Instagram Stories again. Wait for the prepared Story to load before editing it.
- Test another connection. Try Wi-Fi and then cellular data. If Instagram repeatedly opens the wrong screen or drops the prepared Story, restart the phone and retry.
Spotify’s Canvas support page lists iOS 12 or later and Android 6.0 or later, and notes that availability varies by country or region. Meeting those documented Canvas requirements does not guarantee that every Spotify-to-Instagram handoff will work on a given device.

Fix the problem that matches what you see
Instagram Stories is missing from Spotify’s Share menu
Make sure you are sharing from the Spotify mobile app using the song’s own three-dot menu. Update Spotify, then close and reopen it. If Instagram still is not offered, use Spotify’s Share menu to copy the track link instead; Spotify documents link sharing in its sharing instructions. A copied link is a useful way to direct people to the song, but it does not preserve the Canvas share payload.
Instagram opens its camera instead of the prepared Story
This suggests the app handoff did not complete, but it does not by itself identify which app caused the failure. Leave Instagram installed and logged in, open it once manually, then return to Spotify and retry the native share. If that does not help, force-close both apps and test the share again on another network. Older Spotify Community reports describe similar handoff failures, but they are historical user reports rather than confirmation of a current widespread bug: report 1 and report 2.

The Canvas works in Spotify but is missing in Instagram
Try the exact Spotify sharing path again and let the prepared Story finish loading. Do not copy and paste a Spotify URL if your goal is to transfer the Canvas; a link share is not the same payload. Test a second song with a visible Canvas. If that one transfers correctly, the issue is more likely tied to the first recording or its availability than to every share on your device. If no Canvas transfers, the problem may be in the app handoff or Instagram’s Story composer; visibility in Spotify alone does not prove Instagram can render the visual.
The Story has static artwork instead of a moving loop
First confirm that the visual is animated in Spotify’s Now Playing screen, then start a fresh share from that song’s three-dot menu. If the Story composer still shows only static artwork, test another Canvas-enabled track. Spotify’s intended share combines the Canvas with track information and a Spotify link (Spotify for Artists), but a successful display inside Spotify does not guarantee that Instagram will preserve the animation after the handoff. Avoid third-party tools that extract or download a Canvas; they may create privacy, security and copyright risks.

The Canvas appears but the Story has no audio
Separate the visual from the audio layer. Older Spotify documentation said that a Canvas shared to Instagram Stories did not include the track’s audio (Spotify for Artists, historical guidance). Spotify later announced audio previews for Spotify-to-Instagram Story shares in August 2025, but that announcement is not a guarantee for every account, track, region or share flow. A silent Canvas does not necessarily mean the Canvas transfer failed.
Only one song fails
Compare three tracks: the song that fails, another song by the same artist, and a Canvas-enabled song by a different artist. If the failure is limited to one recording, check whether that exact version has a Canvas and is available in your market. A clean or explicit version, remix, alternate release or territory-specific recording can be a different track from the one carrying the Canvas. For an artist or label, rights may also apply to one recording version but not another.

Every song fails
If Canvas is visible in Spotify for several tracks but none transfers, focus on the shared device and app path: update both apps, confirm Instagram is logged in, restart the apps, test Wi-Fi and cellular data, and restart the phone. If Canvas is missing inside Spotify across tracks too, revisit the Canvas and Data Saver settings and check whether the device and region meet Spotify’s documented Canvas conditions.

Spotify says that split rights can affect which recording versions a label can add Canvas to, and advises checking that the correct recording version is selected. Confirm that Canvas is attached to the released version being tested, not a remix, alternate or territory-specific version. Check the recording identifier and delivery details with the distributor or label, then verify that the Canvas appears in Spotify’s mobile Now Playing view. If the Canvas appears in Spotify but not in the Instagram Story for one recording, ask a listener in the same region to test that exact version. A single-track failure is a reason to investigate recording metadata, rights or territory before treating the entire integration as broken.
Workarounds if the native share still fails
- Use Instagram’s music tools if your main goal is an Instagram-native music sticker or selecting a song segment. This is a separate workflow; the track must be available in Instagram’s music catalog for your account and region, and it may not include Spotify’s Canvas or track card.
- Copy the Spotify link from Spotify’s Share menu if getting viewers to the track matters more than preserving the moving visual. A copied link does not guarantee a Canvas in the Story.
- Use a visual manually only when authorized. If you own or have permission to use the visual, you can create a Story with it, but it may not retain Spotify’s deep link or behave like a native Canvas share. Re-uploading copyrighted video or audio can trigger platform rights systems.
Do not rely on unofficial Canvas downloaders, VPNs or account-automation services as routine fixes. They do not reliably repair the handoff and can introduce account, privacy, security or rights problems.
When to contact Spotify or Instagram support
Escalate after testing the native share with more than one Canvas-enabled song, updating both apps, and trying another network. Record the details below so support can distinguish a track issue from a device or handoff issue:
- Phone model and operating-system version.
- Spotify and Instagram app versions.
- Your country or region.
- Whether Canvas plays inside Spotify for the affected song.
- Whether Instagram opens, and what appears in the Story composer.
- Whether the problem affects one track or all tested tracks, and whether another device behaves differently.
If a screen recording would help explain the failure, capture it only if doing so does not expose private messages, account information or other people’s content. Spotify’s general technical guidance also recommends useful, specific problem details when reporting a technical issue (Spotify Support). Reinstalling an app is a later option, not the first fix: confirm you know your login details, and be prepared to download Spotify content again after reinstalling.
