You don’t need a smart TV to watch Netflix. Try your TV’s built-in apps first; if they’re missing or slow, connect a streaming stick or box. A game console, phone or tablet with casting, or computer connected by HDMI can also put streaming video on your screen.
You’ll need three separate things: a streaming service account and, for paid services, a subscription; an internet connection; and a way to display the service on your TV. Buying a streaming device generally does not include a Netflix or other service subscription. Availability varies by country, TV model, device and service.
Choose the method that fits your TV and equipment
| Method | Extra device cost | What you need | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TV’s built-in apps | None if the TV already has the app | Supported TV, internet and service account | Quickest setup with the remote you already use | Older software may be slow or unsupported |
| Streaming stick or box | Varies by device | HDMI input, power and internet | Non-smart or aging TVs | Extra device, remote and setup |
| Game console | None if you already own one | Compatible console, app and internet | Console owners who want to avoid another purchase | Not every model or service is supported |
| Google Cast or AirPlay | None if the TV or connected device supports it | Compatible app and target device; usually the same Wi-Fi network | Occasional viewing from a phone, tablet or computer | Not every app or TV supports casting |
| Computer connected by HDMI | None if you already have the cable and suitable ports | Computer, compatible cable or adapter, HDMI input and internet | A dependable fallback using equipment on hand | Less convenient than a TV remote; adapters and HDCP can cause issues |
Netflix lists compatible smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, cable boxes, Blu-ray players, phones, tablets and computers among its supported device types. That does not mean every model supports every service: check the service’s compatibility information for your particular device. Netflix’s supported-device list and TV viewing guide explain its options.
1. Use the apps built into your smart TV
If your TV already has Netflix or the other services you want, this is usually the simplest and cheapest way to start. Look on the TV’s Home, Apps, Smart Hub or app-store screen; names vary by manufacturer.

- Press Home or the equivalent button on the TV remote.
- Open the apps screen or app store and search for Netflix or another service.
- Install the app if needed, open it and sign in to your account.
- If the app is missing, check for a TV software update, restart the TV, and search the app store again. Then check whether the service supports your exact TV model and region.
Netflix warns that some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support the service. An older TV might still have other apps, but app selection and updates depend on its model, software platform, region and each service. If the app is unsupported or the TV interface is frustratingly slow, use an external streaming device instead. See Netflix’s instructions for watching on a TV.
2. Add a streaming stick or box
For a non-smart TV or a smart TV with outdated apps, a streaming device is often the most convenient upgrade. Most connect to HDMI, use a remote and let you install or open supported apps. Before buying, check that the TV has an available HDMI input and that the device supports the services, resolution and features you want.
Set it up
- Connect the streaming device to an open HDMI port on the TV.
- Connect its power cable. Use the supplied power adapter if required; a TV’s USB port may not provide enough power.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input number that matches the port you used.
- Follow the device’s on-screen instructions to connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if supported, sign in or create the required device account, and install software updates.
- Open or install Netflix and any other desired apps, then sign in to each service separately.
Setup requirements vary. For example, Google’s instructions for its streaming devices call for a compatible display, internet access and the Google Home app on a compatible mobile device; computer-only setup is not supported for the listed devices. Google’s device requirements provide the details.

- Roku: A remote-driven option for people who want a TV-focused interface. Check Roku’s current product information and the availability of your preferred apps and features in your country.
- Amazon Fire TV: A natural fit for households already using Alexa or other Amazon services. Its recommendations and account features are tied to Amazon’s ecosystem. Browse Amazon’s Fire TV page for current products; device prices and availability can change.
- Google TV Streamer (4K): Worth considering if you use Android, Google Home or Google Cast. Google’s current documentation names the Google TV Streamer (4K) and also covers older Chromecast hardware. Some Google device setups require a compatible mobile device. See Google Cast Help and Google’s setup requirements.
- Apple TV 4K: A higher-priced option that may suit Apple-device and AirPlay households. Apple’s U.S. purchase page listed Wi-Fi/64GB at $129 and Wi-Fi + Ethernet/128GB at $149 in August 2026; these are price snapshots, not guaranteed current prices. Check Apple’s purchase page for current pricing. Setup requires an HDMI connection, power, broadband internet and an Apple Account; see Apple’s Apple TV setup guide.
A stick is typically a compact way to add streaming; a box may offer different connections or features. Compare current models for the ports, Ethernet, remote, accessibility options, private listening and app support that matter to you. Do not assume a device purchase includes a paid streaming plan.

Check the 4K chain before paying extra
To watch 4K, the TV, streaming device and connection must all support it, and the service and subscription plan must offer the content in 4K. Google says 4K content on its streaming devices requires a 4K-capable display, compatible hardware and a high-speed internet connection of at least 20 Mbps; that is Google’s device requirement, not a guarantee for every service. Netflix’s Apple TV guidance specifies a compatible 4K TV, HDMI with HDCP 2.2 or later, a Netflix plan that supports 4K, a steady connection of at least 15 Mbps and streaming quality set to High. These service-specific figures are not universal guarantees. Sources: Google device requirements and Netflix on Apple TV.
3. Use a game console you already own
A connected PlayStation or Xbox may be able to play Netflix and other streaming apps, so you may not need another device. Netflix includes popular PlayStation and Xbox consoles among its supported categories, but specific model and regional support can differ. Check the app store on your console and the service’s compatibility information.

- Turn on the console and open its media area or app store.
- Search for the service, install its app and open it.
- Sign in, then use the controller or a compatible media remote to navigate.
This is most useful when the console is already connected and convenient to turn on. A controller may feel less comfortable than a TV remote, and the console must be powered or ready when you want to watch.
4. Cast from a phone, tablet or computer
Casting can let you choose a video on one device and play it on a compatible TV or streaming device. In a Cast-enabled app, the target may fetch the video itself while your phone acts as a remote; this differs from mirroring, which shows the screen of your phone or computer. App support and behavior vary, so a Cast or AirPlay option is not guaranteed for every service.

- Connect your phone, tablet or computer and the TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open a Cast-enabled app and tap its Cast button.
- Select the TV or streaming device, start playback and use the app’s controls to pause, seek or stop.
Google lists Chromecast, Google TV Streamer and TVs with Google Cast as compatible targets. Its current requirements include Android 6.0 or later, or an iPhone or iPad with iOS 12 or later for casting, along with updated Cast-enabled apps. Newer Apple devices and Macs may also need Local Network permission for device discovery. Check Google’s Cast instructions for supported devices and details.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Use AirPlay
AirPlay is an option when the TV or connected device supports it and the Apple device and target are on the same local network. The control may be labeled AirPlay, and app support differs. If you have an Apple TV, you can also install supported streaming apps directly instead of casting; Apple’s setup guide covers the initial connection and account setup.
If the TV does not appear
- Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network that isolates devices.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN, update the app and check the TV’s casting or AirPlay settings.
- On an iPhone, iPad or Mac, check that the app has Local Network permission if prompted or required.
- Restart the phone, TV and streaming device. If discovery still fails, use the TV’s app or connect a computer by HDMI.
Google notes that isolated networks can interfere with Cast discovery. Its Cast Help page includes network requirements.

A computer connected by HDMI is a useful fallback for an older TV with HDMI, a temporary setup or a household that already has a laptop. Netflix supports viewing on compatible Mac, Windows and Chromebook computers through a supported browser or the Windows app; see Netflix’s device list.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the computer to the TV. If the computer has USB-C, Mini DisplayPort or another output instead, use an adapter that supports video for that port.
- Select the matching HDMI input on the TV.
- Open the streaming service in a supported browser or app. If the TV does not show the computer’s display, choose duplicate or mirror display in the computer’s display settings.
- If sound still comes from the computer, choose the TV or HDMI connection as the audio output in the computer’s sound settings.
- Start playback and control it with the computer’s keyboard or trackpad.
Having an HDMI connector on both devices does not guarantee every combination will work. USB-C ports do not all support video output, adapters vary, and HDCP copy-protection or resolution settings can cause a blank screen. HDMI can carry sound as well as video when the devices support it, but the audio output may need changing. If a video goes black, reseat the cable, try another HDMI port, check display resolution and update the browser or app. For 4K streaming, the TV, adapter, cable, computer and service requirements must align.
Which option should you choose?
- Try built-in apps first if the TV has the services you want and they work well.
- Choose a dedicated streaming device if the TV is not smart, apps are missing, or the interface has become slow or unsupported.
- Use a console or computer if one is already connected or easy to connect and you would rather avoid buying another device.
- Use casting for occasional viewing when both the app and TV or streaming device support it.
- For 4K, verify the whole chain—display, device, connection, service and plan—rather than relying on the TV’s resolution alone.
Troubleshoot common problems
The app is missing from the TV
Update the TV software, restart it and search its app store. If the app remains unavailable, check whether the service supports that exact model and region. A streamer connected by HDMI is often the practical alternative when TV support has ended.
The screen is black or there is no sound
Check the selected TV input and cable connections, then try another HDMI port. For a computer, review display resolution and audio-output settings. HDCP incompatibility can prevent some protected video from displaying; Netflix identifies HDCP 2.2 or later as part of its Apple TV 4K requirements for 4K playback. See Netflix’s Apple TV guidance.
Playback buffers or looks soft
Weak Wi-Fi near the TV, router congestion, competing network traffic or a service-side issue can interrupt playback. Restart the router and streaming device, reduce competing traffic, or use Ethernet if your device supports it. Try another app to see whether the problem affects the whole connection or just one service. A 4K-capable device does not guarantee 4K playback.
The TV has no HDMI port
Very old TVs may have composite red, white and yellow inputs instead. HDMI is digital and composite is analog, so a passive HDMI-to-RCA cable is not enough; an active converter may be required. Compatibility, picture quality, audio and copy protection can still be troublesome, making a replacement TV the simpler option for some setups.
You are using hotel, dorm or other managed Wi-Fi
Networks that require signing in through a browser page or isolate connected devices can make streaming-device setup or casting difficult. If you can authenticate a laptop to the network, connecting that computer to the TV by HDMI may be easier.
