On April 24, 2025, Google DeepMind announced new Music AI Sandbox features powered by Lyria 2 and said more U.S. musicians, producers and songwriters could apply for access. The experimental tools let creators generate musical ideas, extend clips and edit sections—but the announcement was not an unrestricted public launch or a promise of finished, full-length songs. Google has since introduced Lyria 3 products, so the Sandbox expansion is best understood as a milestone in its evolving music-AI effort.
What Google announced in April 2025
Google DeepMind described Music AI Sandbox as an experimental set of creator tools built with musician feedback. Its April 24 announcement paired new features powered by Lyria 2 with broader access for musicians, producers and songwriters in the United States. Interested creators were directed to sign up; Google did not announce general access for every user. Google DeepMind’s announcement framed the tools as support for musical exploration and creative work.
The key distinction is between Lyria 2, the music-generation model, and Music AI Sandbox, an experimental creator-facing workflow built around music tasks. A separate Google Cloud implementation makes Lyria 2 available to developers through Vertex AI. Those products have different interfaces, access routes and documented capabilities.
What the Sandbox tools are for
| Tool | What it does | Potential use |
|---|---|---|
| Create | Generates musical ideas from descriptions of characteristics such as genre, mood, instruments, tempo and key; creators can also place their own lyrics on a timeline. | Sketching parts, trying arrangements or finding a starting point. |
| Extend | Continues an uploaded or generated audio clip. | Exploring what might follow an existing musical idea. |
| Edit | Transforms a clip’s mood, genre or style, including targeted changes guided by text prompts. | Trying alternate textures, revisions or transitions. |
This focus on partial tasks is important: the Sandbox was presented as a way to work with musical material, not simply as a prompt box that reliably delivers a finished commercial track. Google’s announcement describes experimental features involving vocals, lyrics and editing, but those capabilities should not be assumed to exist in every Lyria 2 product or access path.

What “broader access” means—and does not mean
The 2025 expansion was for more creators in the United States, not a claim of worldwide availability. Google’s Lyria page describes testing access as limited to trusted testers and directs interested people to a waitlist. That means signing up is not the same as guaranteed admission, and the sources do not establish that every applicant receives every feature. The Sandbox is experimental, not a generally available consumer service with assured access. See Google DeepMind’s Lyria page for its access description.
Sandbox versus Vertex AI: two different ways to use Lyria 2
| Music AI Sandbox | Vertex AI Lyria 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Creators exploring musical ideas through an experimental interface. | Developers and organizations integrating generation into applications or workflows. |
| Access | Sign-up or waitlist; access is limited and experimental. | Google Cloud API access, subject to the relevant account, billing and platform requirements. |
| Documented output | Announcement describes creation, extension and editing workflows; it does not establish one universal output specification for all Sandbox features. | 30-second instrumental WAV clips at 48 kHz, generated from text prompts. |
| Price information | No public price is established in the cited official sources. | Google lists $0.06 per 30 seconds of generated music; this is generation pricing, not a blanket rights license. |
Google announced Lyria 2 on Vertex AI for developers and businesses in 2025. The Vertex AI announcement covers its platform availability, while the Lyria API documentation describes the model’s output and constraints. For an application, ten 30-second generations at the listed rate would cost about $0.60, excluding other applicable cloud charges such as infrastructure or storage. Google’s pricing page is the place to check current rates.
What the Vertex AI model generates
The API documentation specifies short instrumental outputs: 30-second clips in WAV format at 48 kHz, generated from text prompts. It is therefore not documented as an API for generating complete songs with vocals and lyrics. The Sandbox announcement describes a wider experimental creative workflow, but that does not make the Vertex AI model’s documented output equivalent to the Sandbox’s announced features.

Prompt controls
Google describes guidance for genre, mood, instrumentation, tempo or BPM, key and other musical characteristics. The Vertex AI documentation recommends detailed prompts and also discusses negative prompting. Its prompt language is specified as US English, and Google notes that language and genre coverage remain incomplete. Google does not claim uniform performance across genres or musical traditions.

Where the format may fall short
- A 30-second clip is useful for a short cue or a seed idea, but it is not a full arrangement.
- The documented API output is instrumental, so users who need finished vocal songs should not treat it as a substitute for a vocal-generation product.
- The cited sources do not establish that the Sandbox provides conventional multitrack stems, MIDI export or DAW project files.
- Short outputs and prompt controls can support ideation, but they do not establish a complete production workflow or automatic commercial clearance.
How Lyria 2 differs from Lyria RealTime
Lyria 2 is oriented toward generating rendered musical clips with prompt and musical controls. Lyria RealTime is designed for continuous, interactive generation that a user can steer during performance. The distinction is practical: Lyria 2 fits short rendered ideas, while RealTime is aimed at live interaction and ongoing musical streams. They are not interchangeable names for the same workflow.
Watermarking, safety and rights are separate questions
Google says Lyria 2 audio includes SynthID, an imperceptible watermark intended to help identify AI-generated audio. The API documentation also lists content-safety filters, recitation checks and artist-intent checks. These measures address provenance and generation safeguards; they do not establish who owns a recording or whether it is cleared for every commercial use.

Before publishing or monetizing generated music, creators should check the terms that apply to the specific product and consider rights in each part of the workflow: prompts, uploaded audio or lyrics, generated output, and any use of an artist’s identity or style. The cited Google sources do not establish a universal commercial-use license for every Sandbox or Lyria 2 output. A safety filter or watermark is not a substitute for that review.
How Google’s music-generation products have evolved
- November 16, 2023: Google announced its original Lyria model and music experiments connected to YouTube. Google DeepMind’s original announcement describes that work.
- April 24, 2025: Google announced new Lyria 2-powered Music AI Sandbox features and broader access for U.S. creators.
- 2025: Lyria 2 became available through Vertex AI for API use.
- 2026: Google expanded Lyria 3 capabilities into additional products, including Gemini, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Google Vids and ProducerAI. Google’s Lyria 3 Pro announcement documents that later expansion.
Consequently, Lyria 2 is relevant for understanding the Sandbox and Google Cloud’s short-clip API, but it is not Google’s newest Lyria-branded development as of 2026.
Who should consider each option?
Music AI Sandbox
It may suit musicians and producers who want to explore parts, continuations or edits and are comfortable with experimental, limited access. It is a poor fit if immediate admission, a public API or published commercial terms are essential.

Vertex AI Lyria 2
It may suit developers who can work with cloud credentials and metered billing, and whose use case needs short instrumental clips. It is less suitable for a casual creator seeking a ready-made consumer music service or a full-song workflow.
Neither, if the requirement is specific
- Choose a different workflow if you need guaranteed full-length songs with vocals and lyrics.
- Look elsewhere if your production depends on multitrack stems, MIDI export or conventional DAW project files.
- Do not rely on either option if you need immediate unrestricted access or a clearly established commercial license without reviewing applicable terms.
Is Google’s Sandbox a replacement for a producer or a DAW?
The announced workflow is better understood as a set of experiments for getting unstuck, testing directions and developing musical material than as a replacement for production judgment. A creator still has to decide which ideas fit, arrange and refine the work, and manage the rights and release requirements. Google’s announcement emphasizes creator support; the available sources do not establish a complete DAW-style production environment.
