Choose the one you mean: changing one does not automatically change the others.
- Interface language: the app’s menus and labels.
- Content language: the language preference for titles shown in MX Player’s online service.
- Audio language: the spoken track in a video that contains more than one audio track.
- Subtitle language: captions embedded in the video or loaded from a separate subtitle file.
Change the language of MX Player’s menus
MX Player’s support page says its individual app language cannot be changed through Android and recommends changing the device’s system language instead. That guidance may not cover every newer Android device: some versions offer per-app language settings for supported apps, and MX Player does not document a current in-app interface-language selector.
- Open Android Settings and search for App languages or Language.
- If MX Player appears in the app-language list, select it and choose your preferred language.
- If it does not appear, change the device’s system language in Android’s language settings.
- Close and reopen MX Player. If its labels do not update, force-stop the app and launch it again.
If the menus still do not change, the translation may not be supported by your MX Player build. MX Player’s published guidance is here: interface-language support.
Change the online content language
In the MX Player online app, open Menu (hamburger icon) → Content Language, then choose a language. The app should refresh and show content according to that preference. This changes the online catalog preference; it does not change the menus or switch the audio of a local video already playing. See MX Player’s content-language instructions.

MX Player’s support center says its online streaming service is currently available only in India. Access to particular titles can also vary because of digital-rights restrictions, and some online content may not be available on Android TV or Fire TV. The same support center notes that subtitles are not offered for every online title. Check its OTT availability information if the option or title is missing.
Switch a movie’s spoken audio language
A local video must contain multiple audio streams before MX Player can switch its spoken language. Menu wording and placement may differ by app version, device, decoder and file; the selector may appear only after you tap the video.

- Open the video in MX Player and tap the screen to show playback controls.
- Open Menu or the three-dot menu and look for Audio track or an audio/track selector.
- Select the desired stream. Track names may be “Track 1” or technical codec and channel details rather than language names, so you may need to try a track to identify it.
If there is no alternate track, the file probably contains only one audio stream. Changing the app interface or content language cannot add a Hindi, English, Tamil or other dub that is absent from the file. MX Player’s playback support pages cover audio controls and decoder-related issues, but do not provide a current, dedicated walkthrough for the exact track-selector label.
If the audio selector is missing or playback fails
- Check whether the same file has multiple audio streams in another player or on a desktop. A single-stream file has no alternate language to select.
- Make sure you are selecting an audio track, not a subtitle track. For streamed content, the provider controls which audio tracks are available.
- If audio is missing, distorted or causes a crash, try another decoder, such as HW+ or SW, where available. MX Player documents cases where hardware decoding handles the video but not its audio codec; changing decoders can address compatibility, not change the language encoded in the file.
- If another player confirms the file has only one stream, use a properly authored multi-audio version if you need a different spoken language.
Change or load subtitle language
Select embedded subtitles
Start the video, tap the Closed Caption icon at the top right, then select an available subtitle track. If no track is listed, the video may not contain embedded subtitles.

Load an external subtitle file
Use Open in the subtitle panel to select a subtitle file, or place the matching file in the same folder as the video. MX Player’s subtitle support documentation describes loading external subtitles and other subtitle controls: subtitle support.
- Subtitles are missing: confirm the file matches the video, select it manually, or try Online Subtitles in the subtitle panel where that option is available.
- Text is garbled: change Settings → Subtitle → Encoding.
- Characters are absent: the device or player may not have a suitable font; check the subtitle font settings.
- Timing is off: open Menu → Subtitle → Panel and adjust with + or −. MX Player’s support documentation describes adjustments in 0.1-second increments; menu labels can vary by version.
- Text is hard to read: change its appearance under Navigation menu → Local Player Settings → Subtitles → Appearance → Text. Appearance controls styling, not subtitle language.
Translate subtitles in MX Player
MX Player’s support documentation describes AI Subtitle Translation for external .SRT subtitle files. It is a subtitle translation feature, not a way to dub or translate the video’s spoken audio. The support page does not specify all current availability, language or usage limits, so check the controls in your installed app.

Why can’t I change the language?
- You are in the wrong part of MX Player: Content Language applies to the online catalog, while audio and subtitle choices are made during playback.
- No audio choice appears: the video may have only one audio stream, or the current platform may not expose a track selector.
- No subtitle appears: the video may lack embedded captions, no matching external file may be loaded, or the online title may not offer subtitles.
- The menu language stays the same: the app may follow Android’s system language, your device may not offer per-app language selection for MX Player, or the build may not include the desired translation.
- A track is listed but does not play correctly: the file’s audio codec may not work with the current decoder; try another decoder before assuming the track has a different language.
- An online title is unavailable: catalog access and language options depend on the service, platform and region.
