Matt Rife’s Perth visit was a January 2024 event, not an upcoming show. PerthNow reported that he arrived in the city ahead of two sold-out Thursday performances, calling Perth the first Australian stop on his ProbleMATTic World Tour. The report also connected the visit to criticism of a joke in his Netflix special and a reportedly sarcastic social-media response.
What happened when Matt Rife arrived in Perth?
In an opinion article published on 9 January 2024, PerthNow reporter Rachel Fenner said Rife had landed in Perth on Tuesday ahead of two Thursday shows. The article described both performances as sold out and said more than 3,400 West Australians would attend. Those arrival, ticketing and attendance details are claims made in that report, rather than independently confirmed figures here.

PerthNow described Perth as the first stop on the Australian leg of Rife’s ProbleMATTic World Tour. Its headline called the comedian “controversial”; that characterization is the outlet’s framing, not a neutral event detail.
What was the controversy about?
The joke in the Netflix special
PerthNow said the controversy centered on the opening joke in Rife’s Netflix special. In the bit, a restaurant hostess had a black eye, and the punchline suggested that if she could cook, she would not have the black eye. The article reported that domestic-violence experts in Australia and overseas criticized the joke.

The reported Instagram story
PerthNow also reported that Rife posted an Instagram story with the caption: “If you’ve ever been offended by a joke I’ve told, here’s a link to my official apology.” According to the article, the link led to a website selling helmets for people with disabilities. The report presents this as a sarcastic response, not a sincere formal apology.
