Matt Rife visited Perth’s Scarborough Beach two days before his sold-out Perth Concert Hall performance on 11 January 2024, according to PerthNow. Its report, published on 10 January, said the comedian had arrived in Perth ahead of the show and shared the caption “Perth you beautiful bish” on Instagram.
What PerthNow reported about Rife’s beach visit
PerthNow reported that Rife went to Scarborough Beach on Tuesday, 9 January 2024, and posted about Perth on Instagram. Photographs accompanying the report showed him with members of his entourage; their captions credited Matt Rife and Faith Moran / BACKGRID. The report also mentioned a separate photograph of Rife holding a koala, but did not say it was taken at Scarborough Beach. PerthNow’s 10 January report is the source for the visit and its details.

When was the Perth Concert Hall show?
The Perth performance was scheduled for Thursday, 11 January 2024. The Music’s contemporaneous Australian tour report identifies that date, and both The Music and PerthNow reported the Perth shows had sold out. These were past performances, not current ticket listings. PerthNow said more than 3,400 West Australians were expected at the Thursday show; that was an advance estimate, not a confirmed final attendance figure. Its earlier 9 January report also covered the Perth dates.
Why reports called Rife controversial
The controversy cited in coverage centered on the opening joke in Rife’s Netflix special, Natural Selection. Reports described it as a joke about a restaurant worker with a black eye. Criticism focused on its implication connecting a woman’s appearance or cooking with violence. Rife later posted an Instagram story he described as an apology, linking to a site selling helmets for people with disabilities. PerthNow and ABC News’ coverage reported on the joke and response.

ABC News quoted Australian anti-domestic-violence advocate Tarang Chawla: “It’s not that you can’t make jokes about certain topics — I don’t think any topic is off limits. But I do think it does matter who is making a joke, and what are they trying to achieve?” A 1800RESPECT spokesperson told ABC News that “jokes and casual statements about domestic, family and sexual violence can be distressing for people affected by violence.”
