The dark “Simpsons” ending associated with Conan O’Brien is a joke, not a documented proposal by O’Brien for how the series should end. It comes from “Bart’s Birthday,” the Season 36 premiere, which pretends to be a series finale before Homer’s familiar gag sends the show back to normal.
What is Conan O’Brien’s “Simpsons” finale?
The likely source of the title is “Bart’s Birthday,” which aired September 29, 2024. The episode stages a mock farewell to The Simpsons, with an animated O’Brien hosting the occasion. Variety described it as a parody of a series finale; its report does not establish that O’Brien personally proposed this ending as his ideal finale. Variety’s episode report

O’Brien’s animated opening monologue plays along with the premise that Fox has ended the show and jokes about his own experience hosting final episodes. He also acknowledges his history with the series: “This show was such a special part of my early career, so being here means the world to me.” The line is spoken by the animated version of O’Brien and was transcribed by Variety. What happens in the mock finale?
Characters and celebrity guests gather at a venue resembling the Dolby Theatre to mark the show’s supposed end. The episode piles on familiar farewell-story beats: Mr. Burns dies, Principal Skinner retires, Milhouse’s family moves away, characters marry, Moe’s closes, and Springfield’s residents say they will miss one another. The real break with the show’s usual status quo comes when Bart realizes the finale has made him turn 11. For a series built around the characters remaining the same age, that birthday makes the farewell feel like a genuine ending. Bart refuses to blow out his candles; Homer moves to strangle him, and the episode resets to Bart turning 10. The finale’s changes are undone.
Why is the ending dark?
The episode turns a celebratory farewell into a threat: Homer’s attempted strangling of Bart is the mechanism that reverses the story. The gag is dark because it uses a violent, long-running joke between the characters to restore the show’s familiar world—not because the episode announces a real death or permanent change. Bart’s return to age 10 puts the series back into its usual loop. Variety’s account of the ending

- They've kept television viewers laughing for nearly 20 years, and now the most popular animated family on the small screen makes the leap into theaters as Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, ad Maggie embark on their first-ever feature-length adventure. Directed by David Silverman and written by a whole host of Simpsons veterans including Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, The Simpsons Movie also features s
How does O’Brien’s history with the show fit?
O’Brien’s connection is more than a one-off celebrity appearance. He worked as a Simpsons writer and wrote “Marge vs. the Monorail.” In a 2007 interview, he recalled Matt Groening’s preference for keeping the regular show grounded in physical rules, unlike the Halloween specials’ looser cartoon logic. O’Brien summarized Groening’s view this way: “He didn’t want The Simpsons to be a cartoon where Homer can run off a ledge like Wile E. Coyote and keep running.” That is O’Brien’s recollection of Groening’s approach, not a formal rulebook. Vanity Fair, July 5, 2007
There is also a separate Simpsons-related finale moment: at O’Brien’s 2021 TBS talk-show finale, Homer appeared in an animated exit interview. That bit concerned the end of O’Brien’s talk show, while “Bart’s Birthday” jokes about the possible end of The Simpsons. They are distinct events. TVLine, June 24, 2021

Did “Bart’s Birthday” actually end the series?
No. The episode was presented as a fictional finale, not a real announcement that the series was ending. Variety reported on October 1, 2024 that the series was not ending, while noting that Fox had not yet renewed it for Season 37 at that time. That is historical reporting, not a statement about the show’s current renewal status. The same report mentioned additional Simpsons specials planned for Disney+, but does not establish their current availability. Variety, October 1, 2024
