What Brooke Schofield accused Clinton Kane of
On June 27, 2024, Rolling Stone Canada reported that Schofield had posted a TikTok series accusing Kane of lying about family deaths, including his mother’s death. Schofield said Kane had told her that his mother and brother had died and described her account of their relationship. Those statements are her allegations, not independently established findings.
TIME later summarized the dispute and Kane’s response in a July 16, 2024 explainer. It reported that Kane answered in a 30-part TikTok series. In one video, he characterized an earlier podcast answer as “dumb” and discussed shame and anxiety connected to the person he had described as his mother.
What Kane’s representative said about the person who died
In a statement reported by Rolling Stone Canada on June 27, Kane’s representative said the “mother” he had referred to in a Zach Sang interview was a “very special mother-like figure in his teenage years, who sadly passed,” rather than his biological mother. The representative said Kane was largely estranged from his immediate family and regretted how he communicated the loss: “Clinton regrets the way this devastating news was communicated at the time.” The statement addressed the explanation for the mother reference; it did not respond to every other detail Schofield raised.

How Kane explained the loss later
In an August 2, 2024 interview with TIME, Kane said that when the mother-like figure became ill and died, “to me it felt as though a parent had died.” He acknowledged that he did not know how to explain publicly that the person was not his birth mother, and said, “I’m not making an excuse.”
That explanation describes how Kane says he experienced the loss; it does not establish every disputed detail of his relationship with Schofield or settle her other allegations. The published accounts present the claims and responses as competing accounts.
