He joked about the injury and said his foot had become infected and was not improving. He later left the assignment before the competition ended, but reporting did not establish that his health caused his departure.
Why Colin Jost was in Tahiti
NBC announced on June 26, 2024, that Jost would cover surfing at Teahupo’o, Tahiti, for its Paris 2024 coverage. His assignment was to preview the waves and interview athletes; he was a correspondent, not an Olympic competitor. NBC’s announcement included Jost’s joke: “And my Writer’s Guild Health Insurance is excited to see what the coral reef does to my back.”
How he injured his toes
On July 30, the Los Angeles Times reported that Jost had shared a photo of his left foot with three toes bandaged. He attributed the wound to coral reefs, not to surfing. In the post caption quoted by the newspaper, he joked: “You know it’s going great when you’ve been to the Olympic medical tent more than any of the athletes.”
What Jost said about the infection
Jost said publicly that his foot had become infected and was not improving. That describes his account of the injury; the cited reporting does not establish a separate medical diagnosis or provide a medical record. It also does not identify a specific infection, treatment, or prognosis.

Did the injury make him leave the assignment?
The Los Angeles Times reported on August 8 that Jost had left the Tahiti assignment before the surfing events were over. NBC said he had stayed longer than originally planned, and the article also noted weather-related delays. It said it was unclear whether his health concerns contributed to his departure, so the injury should not be described as the confirmed reason he left.
Where and when the Olympic surfing took place
The Paris 2024 surfing events were held at Teahupo’o, Tahiti. NBC’s event guide listed competition dates extending through August 5, 2024, with the schedule subject to weather delays.
