He said the first look drew on Black dandy history, the Zoot Suit era, North African and Moorish influences, and André Leon Talley. Harper’s Bazaar reported the change but did not explain why it happened.
What Colman Domingo wore to the 2025 Met Gala
The Gala’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” accompanied an exhibition exploring Black dandy history and the role of dress in shaping Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora. Domingo was one of the event’s co-chairs.
GQ’s May 5, 2025, fitting report describes his custom Valentino outfit as a modern zoot suit: a checkered wool jacket and wide-legged trousers, paired with a royal-blue pleated cape and a sequin-embroidered bolero with ivory feathers and butterfly details. Harper’s Bazaar’s red-carpet account describes a floor-brushing royal-blue robe, a sequined gold-and-white linen bolero, wide-leg wool trousers, a silk shirt, antique silver canes, feathers, and pearl-like necklaces. The publications’ garment descriptions differ, so they are best read as their respective accounts rather than combined into one definitive inventory.
The second look
Harper’s Bazaar reported that “Halfway through the carpet,” Domingo changed into a black-and-white plaid ensemble: a tweed jacket with a large floral accent, a striped button-up shirt, a polka-dot tie, and gray slacks. The report does not give the reason, exact timing, or intended story behind the change; assigning one would go beyond what it reports.

Why he chose blue
In GQ’s firsthand interview, Domingo said he had settled on blue before consulting anyone. He recalled that his mother thought the color suited him and said he was drawn to Yves Klein blue. His conversation with exhibition guest curator Monica L. Miller gave the color another layer: he recalled Miller telling him about an early dandy who saved for “superfine wool” to wear on his freedom day. Domingo said that story made him want to wear blue.
The historical reference is related to, but distinct from, Domingo’s recollection. The Guardian traces “superfine” to Olaudah Equiano’s memoir, in which Equiano describes buying “superfine clothes” after purchasing his freedom. GQ records Domingo’s account of what Miller told him; The Guardian supplies the Equiano context.

The other references in the look
Zoot Suit history
Domingo told GQ that the look also referenced the 1940s Zoot Suit Riots. He described Black and brown men using style to express themselves defiantly amid criticism of fabric use during wartime rationing. This was one of the references he named, not an explanation given for his later outfit change.
North African and Moorish influence, and André Leon Talley
Domingo cited North African and Moorish influence on jewelry, art, and architecture. He also described the blue draping as a nod to fashion editor André Leon Talley. British Vogue independently connected Domingo’s embellished blue cape to the blue cape Talley wore to the 2011 Met Gala.

His mother and personal details
Domingo said he planned to wear a grill bearing his mother Edith’s name and a gold nugget detail recalling a ring he bought as a teenager. The personal references sat alongside the historical ones he described.

The exhibition was inspired by Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Black dandyism is not simply a matter of wearing elaborate or expensive clothes. The Guardian describes it as a way of using clothing to evoke political and historical ideas while expressing individual style. Miller told the Guardian that it is “a sartorial style that asks questions about identity, representation, mobility – race, class, gender, sexuality and power.”

That context helps explain why Domingo described his clothes as narrative rather than ornament. Speaking to GQ, he said, “I don’t just wear clothes, I wear stories.” He also spoke about seeing Black mannequins in dandy-inspired looks at the exhibition: “I am a Black man who loves style, loves tailoring, and it struck me that I had never seen images like that—of myself, saying, I belong in these clothes,” he told Harper’s Bazaar. “I always had to look for a vision outside of myself.”
