Friday, April 14, 2023, opened Coachella’s first weekend at the Empire Polo Club in Indio with a surprise Blink-182 reunion, Gorillaz’s parade of collaborators, and Bad Bunny’s history-minded headlining spectacle. These are standout moments from the day, not an objective ranking: the Los Angeles Times’ live report supplies the performance descriptions, while the schedule shows how difficult it could be to catch everything across six stages.
What counted as a standout on Coachella’s first day?
“Best” here means memorable for its scale, guests, musical choices, cultural context or crowd connection—not a scorecard comparing every act. The Los Angeles Times’ contemporaneous report, published April 14 and updated April 15, 2023, is the basis for the performance details below. Friday’s schedule, published by Pitchfork, helps place those moments in the day’s crowded lineup.
The festival’s first weekend ran April 14–16, 2023, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Friday’s lineup culminated with Bad Bunny headlining the Coachella Stage.
Bad Bunny made the headline set both a party and a history lesson
The Times described a two-hour performance that kept Spanish as its primary language while reshaping reggaetón and trap songs with house-oriented arrangements. Video interludes situated the music in a longer lineage, including references to Son Cubano, bomba, salsa and reggae, as well as Black Latino pioneers.

At one point, Bad Bunny asked the crowd, “Do you prefer me to speak in English… ¿O en español?” The question captured the set’s refusal to treat Spanish as a barrier to a stadium-scale pop show. Its context was part of the performance, not a detour from it.
The spectacle had technical rough patches. The Times reported intermittent sound failures and audio cutouts during Post Malone’s cameo, so the show was not seamless even as it delivered the night’s largest production and most explicit historical framing. Pitchfork listed Bad Bunny at 11:25 p.m. on the Coachella Stage.
Gorillaz turned the Coachella Stage into a meeting of collaborators
Gorillaz’s 8:35 p.m. Coachella Stage set assembled musicians from across the group’s catalog. De La Soul members Posdnuos and Maseo joined for “Feel Good Inc.,” and Del the Funky Homosapien appeared for “Clint Eastwood.” Thundercat played on “Cracker Island”; other guests included Slowthai and Jamie Principle.

Blink-182 made a surprise reunion the day’s jolt
Blink-182’s Sahara Tent appearance brought Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker and Tom DeLonge together onstage for the first time in almost a decade, according to the Times. The band opened with “Family Reunion” and played songs including “What’s My Age Again?”
The set was a surprise addition, distinct from a routine scheduled appearance, though Pitchfork’s published schedule later showed a 6:45 p.m. Sahara slot. That detail matters when reconstructing the day: the reunion’s impact came from the unexpected return of the classic lineup as well as the songs themselves.

Other Friday sets made the day feel expansive
Burna Boy brought a joyful dusk set to the main stage
At 7:05 p.m., the Nigerian singer performed on the main stage. The Times emphasized his energy and smile, and contrasted the crowd’s scale with his earlier 2019 appearance. It did not provide a measured crowd count, so the comparison is best understood as the report’s impression rather than a statistic.
Muna and boygenius made “Silk Chiffon” a communal moment
Muna’s Mojave Tent set became a synth-pop dance party, according to the Times. The band brought out boygenius for “Silk Chiffon,” turning a guest appearance into a shared performance of one of Muna’s songs.

Doechii drew what the Times described as a healthy main-stage crowd. Before “Persuasive,” she delivered an a cappella Beyoncé verse; the performance ended with a ballroom-influenced sequence. The combination made the set a distinct solo breakout moment amid a day full of high-profile collaborations.

Metro Boomin assembled a long list of guests
Metro Boomin’s 10:35 p.m. Sahara set brought out the Weeknd, Future, Don Toliver, John Legend, Diddy and 21 Savage, according to the Times. Its guest roster made it one of the night’s most concentrated displays of star cameos.
Kaytranada’s guest moment had a technical snag
Kaytranada’s 7:30 p.m. Outdoor Theatre set featured Kali Uchis, but the Times reported that her microphone failed until the final chorus. The appearance still added a guest collaboration to the day, though the audio issue qualified its execution.
Stage conflicts shaped what festivalgoers could see
Friday spread performances across six stages, and notable sets overlapped. In the afternoon, Overmono, Pusha T, Muna and Magdalena Bay began within half an hour of one another. Later, Burna Boy, Yves Tumor and Blink-182 competed for attention at overlapping times. The result was a day of choices rather than a sequence anyone could watch in full.
For a schedule-based view, Pitchfork lists Friday set times in Pacific time. The FADER’s Friday livestream guide reported that all six stages streamed on YouTube during both 2023 weekends; that is historical broadcast information, not confirmation that recordings remain available today.
