Chris Jericho’s career began in Canadian wrestling in 1990, crossed through international promotions, ECW, WCW and WWE, and later added music, acting, books and AEW. A photo retrospective works best as a sequence of dated turning points: each image should identify its setting and show what changed in his career.
How to read this photo timeline
The milestones below provide a chronological framework for a visual retrospective, not a complete match record or a verified archive of photographs. For each image, use a dated photo whose rights are cleared, and caption the promotion or setting alongside the career significance. A milestone date does not by itself verify that a particular image was taken on that date.
1990: First match in Alberta
October 2, 1990 — Ponoka, Alberta
WWE dates Jericho’s first match to October 2, 1990, in Ponoka, Alberta. In a 2015 interview, Jericho recalled: “The first match I ever had in Ponoka, Alberta, Canada, on Oct. 2, 1990 — my name was Chris Jericho.” A photo from this early period would mark the beginning of the career, before the television presentation and larger audiences of his later years. WWE’s retrospective on his debut includes the recollection.
Early international wrestling: Canada, Mexico and Japan
Before ECW and WCW
WWE says Jericho trained at the Hart Brothers School of Wrestling, debuted at 19, and competed in Canada, Mexico and Japan before gaining prominence in ECW. Its biography does not provide a year-by-year itinerary for those stops, so images from this period should be captioned with the specific event, promotion and date only when independently confirmed. The broad significance is the international foundation that preceded his better-known American television chapters. WWE’s biography of Chris Jericho summarizes this early career.

ECW and WCW: from rising name to major promotion
ECW, followed by WCW in 1996
Jericho gained prominence in ECW before moving to WCW, which WWE dates to 1996. The shift from the earlier international circuit into a major American promotion makes this a useful transition in a photo sequence. Captions should identify the actual ECW or WCW appearance shown rather than imply that every image represents the moment he joined a promotion. WWE’s biography notes that he won multiple championships in WCW, but does not provide a complete date-by-date ledger.
1999: The Y2J arrival on WWE television
August 9, 1999 — Raw
WWE dates Jericho’s debut to August 9, 1999. The arrival was staged around a millennium countdown that ended during The Rock’s Raw segment, introducing the “Y2J” persona to WWE viewers. A countdown image or a frame from that segment can show the change in presentation: the international and promotion-hopping wrestler was now making a deliberately theatrical entrance on WWE television. Jericho discussed the debut and the Y2J concept in WWE’s 1999-debut retrospective.

2001: WWE’s first Undisputed Champion
December 9, 2001 — Vengeance
At Vengeance on December 9, 2001, Jericho defeated The Rock for the WCW World Heavyweight Title and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin for the WWE Championship. WWE credits him as its first Undisputed Champion. This is the clearest championship centerpiece for a career-in-photos feature: the image should be tied to the event and the double-title achievement, not presented as a generic title win. WWE’s biography also credits him with six World Title reigns and calls his nine Intercontinental Title reigns a record; those are WWE’s own figures and scope, not a count across every promotion.
2008: A different presentation and the Shawn Michaels rivalry
Jericho’s retrospective view of reaching his potential
In a later interview, Jericho singled out his 2008 suit-wearing character and rivalry with Shawn Michaels as the period when he felt he had reached his potential as a top performer. That is his assessment of his own career, rather than an objective ranking. A photo from this chapter can contrast with the Y2J countdown era: the emphasis is on a more controlled, suited presentation and a prominent personal rivalry. WWE recounts his perspective in its interview about the 1999 debut and his career.

2015: A 25-year milestone
October 2015 — anniversary celebration
WWE marked 25 years of Jericho’s career in a feature published October 7, 2015. Jericho said, “I wear my 25-year career as a badge of honor.” Lance Storm, identified as Jericho’s first opponent, reflected on his longevity and his championship unification milestone. The anniversary is a useful visual hinge: it places the first-match date alongside a career already spanning multiple promotions and decades. Storm’s comment was made in 2015 and should not be treated as a current assessment of Jericho’s health. WWE’s 25-year feature contains their recollections.

A new chapter in WWE’s retrospective biography
WWE’s biography describes Jericho’s partnership and rivalry with Kevin Owens, “The List of Jericho,” and his United States Championship. These details give a later WWE photo sequence a distinct character from the earlier Y2J and 2008 eras: the on-screen partnership, list-based comedy and championship role all belong in captions only when the chosen image actually depicts them. The biography is retrospective rather than a complete chronology, so it does not establish dates for every moment in this period.

Beyond wrestling: Fozzy, acting and books
Creative work alongside the ring career
Jericho’s career also includes touring with the heavy-metal band Fozzy, acting and writing several books, according to WWE’s biography. These are parallel strands rather than a detour from the wrestling timeline; they help explain why a photo retrospective need not consist only of ring or entrance images. Choose a dated, properly identified performance, production or book-related image if including one. The available biographical account supports these broad activities, not a complete filmography, discography or bibliography.
2019: The AEW chapter begins
January 2019 — signing with All Elite Wrestling
Jericho’s official website search listing records that he signed with All Elite Wrestling in January 2019. Because that information comes from a listing rather than an opened, detailed official chronology, it supports the historical signing date only; it does not establish his current contract or affiliation. In the photo timeline, label an AEW image with the event and date shown by its original publication rather than treating the signing date as the image date.

Image captions and rights matter
- Use a verified date and name the promotion or setting for every image.
- Explain the milestone in the caption, but do not claim an image captures a specific match or event unless its provenance confirms it.
- Obtain permission or a license for each photograph. The fact that an image appears on an official WWE or Jericho page does not grant reuse rights.
- Keep attributed opinions and organization-specific statistics in context: Jericho’s 2008 assessment is his own, and the title figures above are WWE’s claims.
