Clay Aiken said becoming a father helped prompt him to publicly acknowledge that he was gay. After his son Parker was born, Aiken explained that he did not want to raise a child to lie or hide the truth. The disclosure appeared on the cover of People in September 2008 under the headline “Yes, I’m Gay.”
Why did Clay Aiken come out after becoming a father?
Aiken connected his decision to fatherhood. A preview of his People interview, reproduced by Clay Aiken News Network, attributes this statement to him: “I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that.” The preview was published September 24, 2008; the full original magazine article was not consulted.

In contemporaneous coverage, Aiken was described as having made a promise to himself as a new father to acknowledge publicly that he was gay. The central reason he gave was not a general statement about public life: he said he could not raise his child to lie or conceal who he was. CBS News, reporting from the Associated Press, reproduced the cover wording as “I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things.”
What the 2008 cover and interviews said
The September 2008 People cover showed Aiken holding his infant son and used the headline “Yes, I’m Gay,” according to CBS/AP’s September 24 report. The interview followed Parker’s birth. Aiken had become widely known as the runner-up on American Idol in 2003.

In a separate television interview after the disclosure, Aiken described the moment as “time to let the guard down,” as reported by ABC News on September 24, 2008. That remark complements, but is distinct from, the fatherhood-centered explanation reported in connection with the magazine interview.
What was reported about Parker’s birth
September 2008 ABC News coverage identified Parker as the child of Aiken and his longtime friend Jaymes Foster. It reported that the two had considered having a child through in-vitro fertilization; the idea had initially been treated as a joke before they decided to proceed. Aiken acknowledged that their arrangement was unconventional. ABC News’ September 25 report does not establish further details about their legal or household arrangements, so those should not be inferred.

How Aiken later described the reaction
In a December 2024 interview, Aiken recalled losing “fifty percent” of his fanbase after coming out. ABC News presented this as Aiken’s recollection, not as an independently measured audience statistic. He also reflected on how he perceived attitudes toward LGBTQ people had changed since 2008. ABC News published that retrospective account on December 15, 2024.
