After her custom Mugler look drew attention on the 2026 Grammys red carpet, Chappell Roan said she did not think it was “THAT outrageous.” She called it “awesome and weird” and urged people to exercise their free will. The dress was a contemporary couture look referencing a 1998 Mugler design—not a retail outfit or, according to Vanity Fair, a dress with real nipple piercings.
What did Chappell Roan say about the dress?
Roan responded to reactions in an Instagram caption reproduced by India Today on February 3, 2026:
“Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit. The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will it’s really fun and silly 😀 Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me (sic)!!”
On the red carpet, she also told E!’s Zuri Hall, “I like breaking the mold,” according to Vogue.

Why was the look described as topless?
Roan wore a sheer-looking burgundy georgette négligée beneath a matching cape at the 68th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 1, 2026. The dress’s open construction and apparent nipple-ring attachments led coverage to describe the look as topless. Vanity Fair reported that the attachments appeared to be prosthetics, rather than real piercings; that detail is the outlet’s description of the garment’s construction.
The term “topless” is shorthand for the visual effect of this couture design. Roan was wearing a dress, not appearing without a garment.

Who designed Roan’s Mugler dress?
Mugler creative director Miguel Castro Freitas designed the custom burgundy look, and Genesis Webb styled Roan, according to Vanity Fair. The Associated Press likewise described the dress beneath the cape as a georgette négligée.

The 2026 look drew on Thierry Mugler’s Spring 1998 couture collection. Vogue identifies Erica Vanbriel as the model who wore the original nipple-piercing dress. Vanity Fair described Roan’s outfit as a contemporary recreation of a Mugler haute couture set from 1998. It was a new custom design by Castro Freitas, not the original runway garment.

The distinction matters: the 1998 piece was the archival reference, while the 2026 gown was made for Roan’s Grammys appearance. The contemporary version’s apparent attachments were reported as prosthetics by Vanity Fair.
