A Par Can light can do more than make a set visible. In a scene described in a 2018 profile, Hetal Dedhia used changes in light color and direction to suggest a car moving and then braking. That is the work of a gaffer: turning a scene’s visual needs into lighting decisions and making them happen on set.
What a gaffer does
A gaffer leads the electrical and lighting work on a film or television production, according to the 2018 profile of Dedhia published by Scroll.in. The job combines creative judgment with practical execution: shaping how a scene looks while coordinating the equipment, power and rigging needed to produce that result.
Dedhia described lighting as central to the image on screen: “I think lighting is the most important thing for films and commercials.” She added, “Without it, you can’t make anything look good.” In the profile’s car example, shifts in a Par Can light’s color and direction help communicate movement and braking, rather than simply illuminating the set.
How Dedhia entered the work
The Scroll.in excerpt says Dedhia began her career in 2005, following her father, Mulchand Dedhia, into gaffing. She started at the family company, Light and Grips, where the profile says she spent six months working without pay, as other aspiring gaffers did. The article describes learning through the hands-on demands of the job, including carrying equipment and rigging lights on ladders and scaffolding.

The profile identifies her as a director at Light and Grips at the time it was published in 2018. That is a dated description, not confirmation of her current role or the company’s present status.
Working in a male-dominated crew
The 2018 account describes skepticism Dedhia faced as a woman entering a technical crew where gaffing was treated as men’s work. Her father recalled trying to discourage her: “I tried to convince her that this is a man’s job because it involves lifting heavy cables and walking on scaffolding to fix the lights.” The same physical tasks that prompted his concern were part of the practical training the profile describes.

The source calls Dedhia Bollywood’s first female gaffer, but the account does not provide workforce statistics or a broader study of women’s representation in film crews. Its significance is more specific: it documents one woman’s entry into a demanding technical role in Hindi cinema and the work behind the image audiences see.
Credits named in the 2018 profile
The excerpt names Bluffmaster, Karthik Calling Karthik and Road, Movie among Dedhia’s work. It also says she assisted her father on international productions filmed in India, including Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Un Plus Une. These titles are attributed to the 2018 profile, rather than presented as a complete or updated filmography.

The book behind the excerpt
Scroll.in published the excerpt on October 24, 2018, with reporting credited to Gayatri Rangachari Shah and Mallika Kapur. It comes from their book Changemakers: Twenty Women Transforming Bollywood Behind the Scenes, published by Penguin Books in 2018. The Indiana University catalog lists a foreword by Farah Khan and includes a chapter titled “Hetal Dedhia: the gaffer.” The book’s twenty women are its featured subjects, not a measure of women’s representation across the industry.
Eastern Eye’s November 2018 overview likewise described the book as focusing on women working behind the scenes in commercial Hindi cinema and identified Dedhia as a gaffer and head electrician. The book is listed under ISBN 9780143441731.
