Reports in January 2023 described links claiming to show explicit videos of former La Vergne, Tennessee, police officer Maegan Hall as fake or misleading. Some reportedly led to scams or unrelated material. That reporting does not authenticate every file later circulated under her name, and it is not evidence that a genuine video leak occurred.
What the “leaks” reports said
Narcity reported in January 2023 that links advertised as leaked porn involving Hall were fake or misleading, with some leading to scam websites or unrelated content. Its account attributed the information to Rolling Stone. This describes links circulating at that time; it is not an audit of every image or video posted since. Read Narcity’s report.
The available reporting therefore supports a distinction between a claim attached to a link and the material, if any, behind it. A headline, thumbnail, or file name does not establish who appears in a clip or where it came from. The sources cited here do not verify the provenance of every specific item shared under Hall’s name.
The underlying La Vergne police investigation
The online claims followed a separate story: a workplace misconduct investigation at the La Vergne Police Department in Tennessee. WSMV reported that investigators reviewed nearly 13 hours of interview recordings and that officials concluded six officers had unreported sexual relationships. The station reported Hall was hired in 2020 and fired in connection with the investigation. Those findings concern department conduct; they do not verify explicit videos. What deepfakes have to do with this—and what they do not prove
On June 5, 2023, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center warned that people can manipulate benign photos or videos into explicit synthetic media and use it to harass or sextort victims. The advisory defines deepfakes broadly as generated or manipulated digital media. It provides relevant general context, but it does not identify any Hall-related clip as a deepfake or establish that every purported leak is synthetic. Read the FBI IC3 advisory.
How to assess a claim about a specific clip
- Look for verification of the file itself. Reputable reporting or an official record should address the particular item, not merely repeat a claim in a post or search result.
- Separate identity from labeling. A name in a title or a recognizable-looking thumbnail is not, by itself, proof of who appears in a video.
- Check the link before opening it. A promise of sensational or “leaked” material can be an engagement lure or lead to a scam or unrelated content, as contemporary coverage described in this case.
- Do not repost or forward unverified intimate material. Sharing it can amplify a false claim and cause further harm to the person named.
This is a way to assess claims, not a forensic test. The reporting cited here does not establish the origin of every file that may circulate now.
