A 2022 excerpt from Ashok Mukhopadhyay’s biography Charu Majumdar: The Dreamer Rebel reconstructs the questioning of the CPI(ML) leader after his arrest in Calcutta in July 1972. It is a dramatized scene, not an established verbatim police transcript: the excerpt says some interrogators’ names have been changed.
What happened in the interrogation scene?
Scroll.in published the passage on 6 June 2022 as an excerpt from Charu Majumdar: The Dreamer Rebel, with permission from the book. The narrative places Majumdar’s arrest in the early hours of 16 July 1972 at a flat on Middle Road in Calcutta. It then depicts a meeting with Subrata Mukherjee, identified in the passage as Minister of State for Home Affairs, and further questioning at Lalbazar the following day, after a visit from Majumdar’s daughter Anita. Was Charu Majumdar’s interrogation recorded?
The excerpt does not establish that its dialogue comes from a surviving recording, police file, or verbatim transcript. Its own framing describes an imagined interrogation, and it notes that several interrogators’ names have been changed. The exchanges are therefore best understood as the biographer’s dramatization of the encounter, not as proof of exactly what Majumdar or his questioners said.
That distinction matters because the scene combines purported biographical detail with invented or reconstructed conversation. It gives readers a way into the political and personal tensions surrounding Majumdar’s detention, but it cannot by itself settle what was said in custody.

What political questions does the passage dramatize?
The questioning turns on Majumdar’s politics and the party’s internal tensions. In the scene, he is asked about violence directed at landowners, moneylenders, and police, and he expresses support for Mao and the Naxalbari path. The passage also stages a dispute over Sushital Roy Choudhuri, Majumdar’s authority, and the principle of collective leadership. These positions and exchanges belong to the book’s imagined dialogue; the excerpt is not an archival source for the precise words.
How does the scene fit the Naxalbari and CPI(ML) history?
CPI(ML) Liberation’s account dates the Naxalbari peasant upsurge to May 1967 and describes Majumdar as a leading organizer of the Tebhaga movement and later peasant agitation in North Bengal. It says CPI(ML) was founded two years after Naxalbari. This is the party’s account of the movement and its legacy, so its interpretation should be attributed to the organization rather than treated as a neutral, independent assessment. The party’s publisher’s note for a 2012 collection says it includes a brief life sketch, reminiscences by Majumdar’s daughter Anita, quotations from his writings and talks, and photographs, including one from police custody.
