In a January 20, 2025, interview with io9/Gizmodo, Castlevania: Nocturne directors Samuel and Adam Deats discussed the show’s adaptation choices, criticism of its portrayal of Annette, and ideas for where the franchise might go next. Their comments offer a window into the creators’ thinking—not confirmation of another season: Netflix’s official listing currently shows two seasons, and a third remains unconfirmed.
What the Deats brothers say makes an adaptation work
Samuel and Adam Deats, brothers and directors at Powerhouse Animation, spoke with io9’s Isaiah Colbert as season two arrived on Netflix on January 16, 2025. The interview was edited for length and published four days later.
Samuel described their approach as starting with the story and characters, then including references to the games in a way that felt affectionate rather than obligatory. “At the end of the day, it came down to simply focusing on telling a good story that feels like the source material you’re adapting,” he said. Adam likewise emphasized caring about both the work and its source material, while making the screen version serve the story being told. These are the directors’ own principles, not a guarantee that every viewer will agree with the result. Read Colbert’s interview with the Deats brothers at io9/Gizmodo.
Why the series reimagined Annette
The directors said they are longtime fans of the games and often favor fidelity to them. But they saw room to develop Annette, whose role in Rondo of Blood is comparatively limited beside the attention given to Richter, Maria, and Dracula. Samuel said he supported the writers’ decision to give her more of a role; Adam agreed that the change worked despite their usual preference for game fidelity.

The adaptation connects Annette to the history surrounding the story. Netflix places the series in France in 1792 and describes Annette as a Caribbean sorceress who seeks Richter and resistance against the vampire threat. The show uses a historical setting and real revolutionary movements within a supernatural fantasy; it is not a documentary account of those events. Adam argued for the historical connection, saying, “The reality is that the Haitian Revolution was intrinsically linked to the French Revolution.” Netflix Media Center’s series description outlines the setting and premise.
What the creators said about “going woke” criticism
Colbert framed part of the interview around accusations of “DEI,” “woke” storytelling, and “blackwashing” directed at the treatment of Annette. Adam characterized the criticism as part of a broader right-wing backlash and said he saw a changed reaction to representation. Samuel compared it with responses to Isaac in the original Castlevania series, saying he did not think the difference necessarily reflected a different creative approach.

Those are the interviewees’ interpretations of the criticism, not a measurement of audience opinion. Adam said he was not apologetic about the writers’ choice to connect Annette’s story to the historical period. The interview explains why the directors supported the creative decision; it does not establish that all viewers share their reading of the backlash.
Will there be a Castlevania: Nocturne season 3?
A third season has not been confirmed by the sources cited here. Asked about continuing the story, Samuel said the uncertainty facing the entertainment industry made it difficult to promise anything. He said that if a continuation with these characters happened, the team would want to take its time and honor both the characters and the source material. Adam asked fans to cross their fingers. These remarks express interest and caution, not a renewal announcement.

Adam said he and Samuel had discussed eventually reaching Symphony of the Night, with Alucard at the center and Richter included. He also mentioned possibilities such as a Juste flashback movie connected with Harmony of Dissonance, or an origin story based on Lament of Innocence. These were ideas raised in the interview, not announced projects or a confirmed production slate.
