Kidd’s discovery about Natalie deepens their connection without settling the teenager’s future, while Pascal’s grief and Damon’s place at Firehouse 51 remain in progress. “Ties up loose ends” fits the hour only in part.

Does the gym case get resolved?
Yes. Violet and Novak connect two gym-related emergencies after Violet spots a pattern. Testing reveals a veterinary sedative in both patients, and the gym owner has been cutting steroids with it. The investigation leads to a police search of the gym and the owner’s arrest, according to Ingham’s recap.
This is the episode’s clearest form of closure: a clue leads to an explanation, and the explanation has an immediate consequence. The case also gives the hour a public-safety dimension beyond solving a medical puzzle. Against that procedural payoff, the episode’s longer-running personal stories feel deliberately unfinished.

What does Natalie’s reveal mean for Kidd?
Kidd agrees to let 13-year-old Natalie return to a Girls on Fire session, then discovers that Natalie is living at a business site. Kidd also learns that she rescued Natalie from a house fire years earlier. That history makes their connection more than a new mentor-and-teenager pairing: Kidd’s earlier actions have unexpectedly become part of Natalie’s story.
The reveal is emotionally meaningful, but it does not resolve what will happen to Natalie. Rather than tying off that thread, the episode gives it a stronger foundation and leaves its future open. That distinction matters: a connection can feel like a payoff even when the character’s circumstances remain unsettled.
Rank #2
How do Pascal and Damon’s stories move forward?
Pascal is still grieving
A call involving a car striking a young girl triggers Pascal’s emotional response to his wife Monica’s fatal accident. Novak supports him, and at home Pascal sorts through Monica’s belongings. These scenes show grief surfacing in both his work and private life, but the episode does not present it as resolved. Its contribution is character movement: the loss remains active, and Pascal is shown confronting it.
Damon gets reassurance, not certainty
The recap reports that Damon and Novak have been seeing each other, but they agree to stop now that they are both at Firehouse 51. Separately, Damon worries that he will not earn a permanent place on the team, and Herrmann reassures him that the firehouse is his home. The reassurance offers a moment of belonging, not confirmation that Damon’s position is settled. The relationship decision and his professional uncertainty therefore remain distinct, ongoing threads.
How well do the episode’s strands fit together?
The hour moves between a self-contained investigation and personal stories with longer horizons. The gym case has the most conventional beginning-to-end shape: emergencies, a shared clue, an explanation, and an arrest. Kidd and Natalie’s history gives their storyline a sharp emotional turn, while Pascal’s grief and Damon’s uncertainty add smaller character beats rather than full resolutions.
That mix makes the title’s “loose ends” idea a useful critical question, not a complete description of the episode. “A Beast Like This” closes its most clearly defined case, but it also uses Natalie’s reveal to open a deeper story and keeps other characters’ struggles in motion. The strands share an interest in care, trust, and whether people have a secure place to turn; they do not all receive equally definitive endings.
